Mass Media          1. Do you agree that television is one of the most powerful inventions of all time?

Yes, I do. TV definitely has a great influence on our lives. It’s impossible to imagine our life without it. It’s a wonderful means of education, one of the main sources of information. It tells us what to do, what to buy, how to dress, how to avoid trouble. TV programmes cater for all tastes. Everyone has a favourite daily or weekly chart show, a documentary, a soap opera, a serial or at least a news program. Television captivates our attention, stirs our imagination and stimulates our intellect. I personally consider it to be a wonderful way to relax and to switch off from everyday problems.

Are today’s teens interested in any traditional media? Why?

Today's teenagers have grown up surrounded by technology and the Internet, so naturally they're not going to be as interested in old media as the older generations are.Today’s teens are not really interested in any traditional media. Television, radio and newspapers are becoming less and less popular. Teenagers don't read newspapers. The only newspapers that are read are the cheaper tabloids. They're also not interested in listening to the radio. Istead, they prefer online sites where they can download music. Also, teens watch less TV than ever before thanks to online services.

What questions will you ask your friend from Great Britain about TV in his life?

1. How many TV channels are there in Britain? 2.What is a typical Saturday evening TV programme like? 3. What programme on TV would you try not to miss?

4.Give your friend advice what he can use the Internet for.The Internet has recently become another source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news time on TV. But you shouldn’t forget that much of the information in the Internet is not always true and can be given not objectively. There are a lot of educational sites in the Internet which you can use to help you with your lessons or exams. You can also use the Internet for social networking, searching and researching topics with Google, watching videos on YouTube, downloading music and films from file-sharing sites. Downloading films off the Internet is rather popular. But you should know that the quality of the films is not always good, they have to be watched on a small computer screen and there is a risk of viruses. But most teens are into the Internet anyway.

What do you know about the national newspapers in the UK?

The most traditional medium of delivering news to the people is, of course, the newspaper.National newspapers in the UK were traditionally divided by format, between serious, intelligent, quality newspapers – broadsheets -and the sensational, popular or red-top tabloids. Several of the broadsheet newspapers have now changed to tabloid or Berliner formats. ("Berliner" is about the same size as a tabloid, which is easy to open in public transport, but taller.) Even so, the difference in reputation between the two types still remains. Broadsheets and 'broadsheet style' newspapers (serious ones but in "Berliner" or tabloid format) are "The Daily Telegraph", “The Times” , "The Sunday Times", “The Guardian” , "The Observer", "The Independent". Tabloids are "The Daily Express", "The Daily Mail", “The daily Star”, "The Mirror", “The Sun” , "The People", "The Daily Express".

YOUTH AND SOCIETY
1. Let's talk about the role of the youth in our society. Today young people take an active part in the social life of the country. How do they do it?Being together is very important for teenagers, this feeling makes them feel stronger and more confident. Research also proves that teenagers who belong to clubs and youth groups lead a happier life, are less likely to smoke or drink, and are more socially able and physically active. Various activities provide them with a chance to make friends, learn through new experience, have fun and develop different skills and good personal qualities. There are a lot of organizations, groups and movements, so young people can find a group or a movement that will suit their interests. The main aim of these organizations is to involve young people into socially useful activities such as sporting events, volunteering at hospitals, taking care of war veterans, assisting the old and the handicapped, carrying out some ecological projects and doing other things.

2.Would you like to join any of the organizations you have heard about? There is no person in Belarus who has never heard of UNESCO. I really want to become a member of this organization. They arrange conferences, bridges to involve young people from all over the world in decision making process. Teenagers debate and exchange opinions on youth problems in different countries. They learn how to negotiate, how to find the right arguments, how to be tolerant towards each other and how to make decisions which are good for the both sides. They offer wonderful opportunities to meet interesting people.
3.What questions would you like to ask a person who has joined a new internationalorganization?1. What organization did you join? 2. Who is the leader of this organization? 3. Are you taking an active part in its work?
4. What Belarusian youth organization can you recommend your friend to join? The biggest youth organization in Belarus is the BRSM, which includes about 500,000 young people from 14 till 31. I would recommend to join it because the main aim of this organization is to promote patriotism, develop initiative and involve young people in useful social activities. Everybody can find something to their taste. Those who want to help people in need join "the Kind heart movement" and go to hospitals or orphanages and work with disabled or sick people. Some young people who are full of creative ideas can take part in festivals, exhibitions, contests organized by the BRSM to show their talents, for example DJs' battles, Bridges, marathons. The BRSM participates in outdoor activities and sports, including football, running, swimming and hockey. They also provide young people with working places in summer.
5.     If you have a chance to start a campaign, what kind of campaign will it be? What would you campaign for? If I had a chance to launch a campaign, it would be a campaign for a healthy way of life. Young people sometimes happen to be the first victims of all sorts of addictions: drugs, smoking, computer and junk food addictions. That’s why weshould learn to be more reasonable and responsible. It can be a good idea to invite some specialists and discuss pressing issues with them. It's essential to talk about the importance of good habits and their promotion.
