Different types of houses.

I. Let’s talk about different types of houses. Describe your place. There are different types of houses. They are detached, semidetached, terraced houses, blocks of flats. Some people live in mansions, bungalows and cottages. In Belarusian towns most people live in flats but nowadays a lot of nice, spacious cottages are being built around small towns and big cities. People who live in the country usually have their private wooden houses. I live in a flat in a block of flats. It’s a typical 9-storeyed building. There are three rooms in my flat and we have all modern conveniences: central heating, electricity, hot and cold running water. Our kitchen and bathroom have all necessary facilities. There is a big living room and two bedrooms in our flat. I don’t share my room with anyone, that’s why it’s a place where I can relax and have some privacy when I want to be on my own. My room is my haven. I like it because I have everything I need there: a comfortable bed, a wardrobe to keep my things in, a desk with a computer on it, a couple of bookshelves, a chair and other little things. What I like about my house is that it’s not far from my school and it takes me only a few minutes to get here.

II. Do you find your town a comfortable place for living?I personally like my native town and think it’s a nice place for living. First of all it is situated in a very picturesque place. There is a wonderful pine forest near our town where you can gather mushrooms and berries in summer and enjoy the beauty of nature or you can have rest on the bank of the Dvina River. Besides, the town has all necessary facilities for studying: the University, the Lyceum, two colleges, 15 secondary schools, an art college, a musical college. There are also a lot of kindergartens. For those who are keen on sports and games the town offers stadiums, 4 swimming pools, a few sport schools with the necessary equipment. We also have Palaces of Culture, modern shops, a cinema and cafes. There is a nice recreation park not far from the central square. The residents of our town like to come there at weekends or during some holidays.

III. Ask me what my flat looks like. 1. How many rooms are there in you flat? 2. What floor is your flat on? 3. How often do you do repairs and renovations?

IV. Your friend wants to decorate his/her room. Give him some advice on how to furnish it. They say “Tastes differ” and it’s certainly true when it comes to furnishing one’s flat. The thing is that homes reflect the way of life and habits of their owners, like the clothes they wear, the food they eat, the books they read and the friends they spend their time with. Most people try to furnish their flat according to their own tastes. If you are romantic you need things like fireplaces, cushions, carpets, flowers and what not. If you are somebody’s fan decorate your room with posters of the celebrity you admire. As for me my hobby is photography. That’s why there are a lot of photos in my room which show different places I have been to.

V. They say that living in the country is better than living in a city. What do you think about this? Personally I think that it’s muchmore exciting to live in a big city than in a small town or in the country. You can’t but agree that a big city offers more opportunities to get good education, more chances of getting a well-paid job. Besides, there is a wide choice of entertainments such as concerts, theatres and exhibitions, cafes and restaurants. It’s true that living in the country means being closer to nature. I mean fresh air, nice scenery, birds singing their wonderful songs and things like that. It’s really nice to go to the country to spend your holidays or the weekend. I know that many people prefer a healthier and less stressful countryside to a busy and less healthy life in a polluted town or city. But my own opinion is that city life is more comfortable, exciting and varied. So, I wouldn’t like to live anywhere else than but in a big city.

Living in the city vs living in the country.

1. Let’s talk about living in the city and in the country. Do you find your town a comfortable place for living? ? I personally like my native town and think it’s a nice place for living. First of all it is situated in a very picturesque place. There is a wonderful pine forest near our town where you can gather mushrooms and berries in summer and enjoy the beauty of nature or you can have e rest on the bank of the Dvina River. For those who are keen on sports and games the town offers stadiums, 4 swimming pools, a few sport schools with the necessary equipment. We also have Palaces of Culture, modern shops, a cinema and cafes.

2. What makes N. special to you? N. is my home town and I have been living here all my life. Remember the English proverb which says that “there is no place like home” and I absolutely agree with it. My home town can't boast of outstanding architectural monuments, like Paris or Rome, it is not a big tourist centre either, like London. It's not a huge industrial city like Moscow or Minsk, but the citizens of N. are proud of their town. They feel a great affection for N. The major part of this affection can be accounted for the fact that this is their home and wherever they travel they always tend to return back no matter how wonderful and splendid the outer world might be.

3. What questions will you ask a person who is going to move to the countryside. 1. What are your reasons for leaving the city? 2. Aren’t you afraid of being cut off from the exciting events that take place in the city? 3. How are you going to solve the problem of shopping?

4. Your foreign friend wants to see some places of interest in your town. What places can you recommend him to see? You can start with the monument to the first builders of this town , so called the First Tent. Some other monuments are the monument to Lillya Kostetskaya- the young partisan who died during the Second World War and the monument to Ktatorov- who devoted his life to the building of N. Besides we can visit the museum of the history and culture of N. where one can learn some interesting facts about the town. There is also a nice recreation park not far from the central square. The park is one of the favourite places of our citizens. They like to come here at weekends or during some holidays.

                                                ART
1.Let's talk about art. What art do you enjoy most? It goes without saying that art is a great power as it appeals to the heart of a person. When we say "art" we mean something valuable either for a lot of people or just a small group. Different works of art have been created to please the eye and to excite emotions. Some people enjoy painting or sculpture, others theatre performances or films, a lot of people are keen on poetry or prose. We also shouldn't forget dancing, singing, installation, animation, design and photography. Observing pieces of art or making something is a way of entertainment or relaxation. It helps to switch one’s mind from routine activities to something beautiful.

For me art is a chance to express myself and feel connected with people. I am into photography and when I see a good view I always want to take a picture and make it meaningful. It's a way to communicate with the world.

2. Who do you think the most famous Belarusian artist is? I think Marc Chagall is. He was one of the very few artists to exhibit work at the Louvre in their lifetime. Marc Chagall was born in a poor Jewish family in Vitebsk. Against his parents’ wishes the boy decided to become an artist. So he left for St. Petersburg to study art. Later he found a patron who paid for his studies in Paris where he developed his unique art style. It was a mixture of different styles of abstract art like Cubism with a touch of religion, fantasy and nostalgia. During the WWI he became a founder and a director of the Free Academy of Art in Vitebsk. Several years later he left Belarus for Paris and soon his name was known worldwide. Chagall created etchings and theatrical designs, wrote poems besides painting.
3. Ask me some questions about the theatre performance I saw yesterday. What play was on? Who played the leading parts? Did you enjoy the performance?
4. My friend is very good at drawing. Give her a piece of advice on what career would be good for her to choose.

If your friend is good at drawing, she can work for a newspaper and write reviews about different exhibitions and become a critic. If she doesn't like writing, she can try to work as a curator and choose talented artists to participate in exhibitions. If she takes a special course, she can become an interior designer and decorate flats. If she has got good computer skills, why not try web-designing? She can earn good money and work from home. She can also work on film sets, fashion shows or photo shoots as a make-up designer. As you can see she has got a lot of opportunities.
5. Do you want to see more graffiti around town? I don't think that it's a good idea to have a lot of graffiti around Novopolotsk. It's a specific form of art. It's very bright and occupies a lot of space. It's good to have special places for graffiti artists and organize contests and exhibitions for them. I really don't want to see graffiti on the benches in parks, the walls of our houses or bus stops. They make the town look ugly, moreover they are illegal.

Science and technology.Modern means of communication.

1.Now let’s speak about science. What is the role of science in our fast-moving world?

It’s difficult to overestimate the role of science and technology in our life. Scientists investigate the laws of the universe, discover the secrets of nature, make careful observations and apply their knowledge in practice improving the life of people. One can hardly imagine our present day life without such trivial gargets as food processors, air conditioners or vacuum cleaners. Every office is equipped with a PC, an answer-phone, a fax-machine and a photocopier. Every teenager is able to use a remote control, a video recorder, an iPod and a smartphone.Speaking about modern inventions I can’t but mention such thing as computers. In fact they are being used in almost every field today. They can pay wages, reserve seats on planes, control satellites in space, work out tomorrow’s weather, play chess and compose music, they are also used as a means of education at schools.

I’m absolutely sure that all these advanced technical inventions make our life easier and more exciting.

2.Do you use many gadgets and devices at home? Why (not)?

Of course we do. Like any other family we have a fridge, a microwave oven, a food-processor, a vacuum-cleaner, a washing machine and a computer at home. They promise great advantages for our family and help to organize our housework in a more rational way Actually, they save our time for enjoyment and entertainment.

3.What questions would you ask an outstanding scientist

1.What is your greatest achievement? 2. When did you become interested in science? 3. Do you have any hobbies?

4. Give a piece of advice on how to convince my parents of the necessity of a mobile phone for every teenager.

If you want to convince a person of the necessity of a mobile phone you should definitely speak about its advantages. First of all it’s very convenient to have a mobile phone as you can keep in touch with your relatives and friends wherever you are. In case of emergency you can also call the fire-brigade or the ambulance. A smart phone is like a mini-computer in your pocket: it not only provides access to the Internet, but performs hundreds of other operations. It plays music and videos, has a navigation system and what not. So you can’t but agree that mobile phones are the future of technology.

5.People are becoming more dependent on high-tech devices. Is it good or bad?

Science has brought fantastic achievements in every field. We are familiar with them and we have been routinely using them. But that is till the electricity goes out. Only then you realize how dependent you’ve become on the devices that surround you. With no electricity the survival of the modern man would be put at risk, a lot of information would be lost, factories and industrial enterprises would be paralyzed, the structure of the ultra-modern civilization would collapse.I hope it will never happen.

Outstanding People

1 There are many famous names in the history of our country. Do you agree? Yes, I do. In Belarus, as well as in any other country, there are national heroes, outstanding people, who made a contribution to the development of our native land. Many Belarusians became famous in such areas as art, literature, sport, science and politics. We all remember their names; their names are given to streets, avenues and squares.

2. What makesFrantsysk Scoryna one of the most outstanding figures in the history of Belarus? You can hardly find a person in Belarus who has never heard the name of Frantsysk Scoryna. Our prominentcountryman made the greatest contribution to the development of Belarusian culture and science. He was the greatest enlightener, humanitarian and scholar of Renaissance period whose intellectual interests embraced theology, literature, law, medicine and printing. The most significant of these achievements was the translation and publication of the Bible, first in Prague in 1517-1519, and later in Vilnya, the capital of the Grand Principality of Lithuania. There he founded the first printing workshop. F. Scoryna is an outstanding figure not only in the history of Belarusian culture, but also of all Slavonic states.
3.What questions would you ask an outstanding scientist?1.What is your greatest achievement? 2. When did you become interested in science? 3. Do you have any hobbies?

4 Suppose you are to give advice to your friend who wants to become famous. What would you say? In my opinion there are lots of ways to become famous. You can write a pop song, invent somethingnew or appear on a reality TV programme. The best way, in my opinion, is to become notable in the area that interests you most. There are famous cooks, artists, musicians, actors and athletes. Whatever your interest is, keep in mind that the path to fame requires training, hard work and persistence. You should realize that there is more than one way to become famous.
5. Winston Churchill said: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It’s the courage to continue that counts.” What is your opinion?I agree with this saying. Not everyone who's on top today got there with success after success. More often those who history best remembers were faced with numerous problems that made them work harder and show more determination than others. So when you feel down about some failures you should remind yourself that sometimes failure is just the first step towards success.
