PROCEDURE

Regarding The III Ceramic Art Contest «A Tale Made out of Clay»

of The XII International Festival of Folk Crafts «Ax Festival»

(located in the Okolitsa park, Zorkaltsevo village, Tomsk region)

August, 2019

The present regulation determines the arranging order of organizing and carrying out The III Ceramist Art Contest «A Tale Made out of Clay» of The XII International Festival of Folk Crafts «Ax Festival» (hereinafter referred to as «the Contest»).

Purposes and Objectives

- popularization of pottery and ceramist craft and art, familiarizing general audience with individual creators, as well as with ceramist art as a whole;

- support of pottery and ceramist enthusiasts creative activity;

- ensuring the continuation of pottery and ceramist crafts traditions;

- revealing talented pottery and ceramist craftsmen, contributing to their professional growth;

- developing event tourism on Tomsk region territory;

- contributing to the development of souvenir market, professional connections, creating a space for experience and creative exchange;

- the upbringing of patriotism, pride for one’s country, love for national traditions.

Conditions and Procedure

 

1. Pottery and Ceramist craftsmen from the Siberian region, Russia and other countries are invited to take part in the Contest.

2. Contestants are to submit a filled-in application form (that can be found in Annex 1 and Annex 2) to The Autonomous Regional State Cultural Establishment «Dvorets narodnogo tvorchestva «Avangard», the address of which can be found in the 3rd paragraph of the present regulation. Applications must be submitted on any data medium until the 30th of May, 2019.

4. The following events are to be carried out during the Contest:

- opening and closing ceremonies;

- contest of creative works («Homework»);

- contest of creative works that are to be made on the contest site;

- showcase;

- master classes from the jury members for the contestants;

- master classes for the Festival guests.

5. The Contest is to be carried out in two rounds:

5.1 Round 1: (extramural, selection). The jury of the Contests make a selection of the participants: - potters - depending on 5 photos depicting their works with a description (Annex 2); - the hand moulding craftsmen depending on: a) 5 photos depicting their works that reflect their creativity and with a description (Annex 2), b) photos of their illuminating sculpture sketches (sizes – 1 m in height, diameter – 50 cm).

5.1.1 The «Illuminating Sculpture» contest theme is «Heroes that live on a stage» which is devoted to the year of theatre in Russia (the original copies of sketches must be submitted by creators to judges before contest initiation). The glaze colour palette should be as follows: green, orange, white, dark-brown, and yellow. Red-burning clay is necessary to be used.

5.1.2 A number of participants is limited. After the selection 10 male potters, 10 female potters and 10 hand moulding craftsmen will be allowed to take part in the Contest. Not more than 3 contestants per region. Each of the accepted contestants will receive an official notification from the coordinators before the 25th of May, 2019.

5.1.3 Craftsmen who will get to the 1st round:

- are to send a video and photo material lasting from 5 to 7 minutes regarding their oeuvre until the 1st of July, 2019 (OBLIGATORY!);

- Carry out contest works («Homework») based on the theme given (theme is to be announced) and present them on the Contest (the obligatory participation condition). A handiwork will take part in the main contest and in the charity event for the oncology children patients («The Ceramic Ping-pong»).

5.2 Round 2: (internal). The jury members of the Contest review all of the presented works and determine the winners in two categories: 1. «Homework»; 2. A handiwork made on the Contest site «Okolitsa».

Contestants’ works are to be made on a high, professional level in line with ceramics refinement technologies that are relevant to the selection round-submited nominations. The hand moulding craftsmen are to carry their handiworks out in line with the sketches that were presented on the 1st round.

6.  A total rating of the contestants’ material is a sum of their «homework» and the handiwork that will be made on the working site «Okolitsa».

7. The Contest comprises two nominations:

- potter’s wheel (pottery handiworks): male and female nominees;

- hand moulding (hand-moulded creations).

8. Organizers are responsible for:

- media coverage of the works present on the Contest;

- providing working space, exhibition equipment, materials and equipment for carrying the Contest out;

- forming the exposition;

- ensuring the exhibits’ safekeeping;

- ensuring fire safety and sanitary condition of the site.

All the instruments necessary are to be provided by the seconding party.

 

The Jury

For evaluating all contesting works a group of independent judges will be formed. The group will consist of highly professional specialists in the field of ceramics that underwent industry-specific tuition. The order of discussing handiworks and the procedure of voting is set by jury members. The verdict of the jury shall be final and shall be documented in a protocol.

The jury has the right:

- to restrain from taking part in the Contest (having reviewed beforehand) the contestant whose work has been made unprofessionally, who violated any of the demands in the present regulation, and who decorated their creation with materials that are not ceramics-related:

- award the 1st, 2nd, 3rd winning places;

- not award all of the aforementioned award-winning places;

- award special diplomas;

- suggest performing an additional task in case of equal number of earned points.

Evaluation criterion:

- the work’s artistic level;

- adherence to the ceramic refining technics;

- contestant’s mastery and uniqueness;

- combining traditional and innovative technics;

- accordance with the theme given and with the Contest’s conditions.

 

Determining the winners, the order of giving awards out

1. The Contests’ jury determines the winners during the conclusive work review.

2. The Contest’s participants who earned 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places will be rewarded with financial prizes and with corresponding diplomas. Those participants who will not earn awarding places will receive «For participation» diplomas and commemorative prizes.

3. Sponsors, individual entrepreneurships, and organizations may establish special awards and prizes of their own.
