Exercise 1. Warm-up. In pairs or small groups discuss the questions.

1. What is a drone?

2. What parts does it have and how does it work?

3. What does the word “unmanned” mean? And what does it imply?

4. How are drones operated?

5. How are drones used today?

6. Will drones be ever used in businesses, for any commercial purposes?

7. What are drones compatible with?

8. Should one be well qualified to fly a drone?

9. Are drones dangerous?

10.  Have you ever flown a drone?

Exercise 2. Read and guess the meaning of these words which you will see in the text. If you have some difficulties use the dictionary or visit the Internet site:

https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Basic_English_international_wordlist

Aerial • volcano • constant • activity • elevation • collect • accurate • data • directly • emissions • automated • altitude • carbon dioxide • sulfur dioxide • hydrogen sulfide • volcanologist • thermal camera • visual camera • observe • serve • analysis • test • identify • hypothesis • context • essentially • remotely controlled • autonomously • software • sensor • associated • civilian • military • traffic • monitoring.

Exercise 3. Visit the website address given below. Watch the clip How to fly a drone!” and write down the international words you have heard. Then read out the words from Exercise 2, which you have heard in the clip.

Exercise 5. Read the text carefully and try to focus on its essential facts. Make a plan, giving a title to every part of it. Compare your plan with those of your classmates. Whose plan is the most accurate?

A drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are more formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UASes). Essentially, a drone is a flying robot. The aircrafts may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS.

In the recent past, UAVs were most often associated with the military, where they were used initially for anti-aircraft target practice, intelligence gathering and then, more controversially, as weapons platforms. Drones are now also used in a wide range of civilian roles ranging from search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring and firefighting to personal drones and businesses.
