SELF-OPERATED CARS COULD CHANGE OUR WHOLE FUTURE

The prospect of flying cars might soon become a reality. Over the next decade, accelerating autonomous driving technology, including advances in artificial intelligence, sensors, cameras, radar and data analytics are set to transform not only how we drive, but the notion of car ownership itself. Computer-operated, also known as a driverless car, self-driving car or robotic car has become the next major battlefield for the car industry. If we look at the most recent predictions, the majority of car manufacturers estimate the first highly to fully automated vehicles (AVs) will hit the market between 2020-2025. Self-operated cars will be safer, reduce pollution and congestion, and will also bring about a paradigm shift in personal vehicle ownership rates. 59% of industry bosses believe that more than half of all car owners today will no longer want to own a car by 2025.

Today’s automated vehicle sector is crowded space. It’s estimated that at least 33 tech and auto corporations, ranging from Apple to Chinese bus manufacturer Yutong – via the likes of Audi, BMW, Google, Honda, Intel, Tesla, Uber and Volkswagen – are currently developing AV technology.

Tesla is inching closer to having a fully self-driving car. CEO Elon Musk made a huge announcement when he said cars currently in production – which includes the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 – are being built with new hardware that will enable them to be fully autonomous.

Self-operated car will eventually reshape the automobile design. There will be a personal video display for every passenger informing about a current location, the distance to your destination and speed.

The self-driving cars are being built with eight cameras that provide 360-degree visibility and 250 meters of range. They come with one radar sensors, and Nvidia’s Titan GPU onboard computing system to process all the information. All of these additions also improve Tesla cars’ Autopilot capabilities, renaming the system Enhanced Autopilot. The car comes with a virtual driver’s instrument that shows where the car is in relation to its lane. Tesla car also comes with massive 17-inch display that shows a map of where the car is in relation to its surroundings. Moreover, the car is able to distinguish between an obstacle and a sign with relevant information. The obstacles are highlighted in blue. The car can also see traffic lights – that’s an important upgrade.

At the moment, the driverless car doesn’t seem like novelty, it will open up new prospects. It might be the biggest leap forward since the Model T.
