Toshi, a nineteen-year-old, from Nagasaki, in Japan, wants to become a sumo wrestler. Toshi. who weighs over 175 kilos, and is 1 metre 95 tall, lives in a special training camp, called a Heya, with thirty other sumo wrestlers. Their training is very hard. Even before breakfast, they normally practise for four and a half hours! It is important that Toshi doesn't lose weight, so he always has a large lunch of rice, meat, fish and vegetables with lots of beer, and sometimes he eats extra pizzas and burgers. After lunch he goes to sleep for a few hours. One day, Toshi hopes to be famous - and rich - but at the moment he doesn't earn much money, so each month his parents send him money to help him.

Ania, who comes from Lublin in Poland, is a champion gymnast. She's seventeen years old and lives in a small apartment with her mother. She trains very hard - usually about eight hours every day, except Sunday, when she rests. She normally gets up at about seven in the morning and practises for three or four hours. Then she rests in the afternoon, before practising for another four hours in the early-evening. Like most gymnasts Ania is very small - only about 1 metre 50, and she weighs very little too - around 40 kilos. This is very important for a gymnast, so she doesn't eat very much -although her mother makes sure she has a healthy diet! Ania doesn't earn very much money, but she enjoys her lifestyle very much.

Dan, from Bucharest in Romania, is a professional footballer with a big Italian football club. He lives with his Italian girlfriend in a large villa in the mountains near Milan. Although he's only twenty-three years old, he earns around $50,000 a week. He spends his money on fast cars, Italian designer clothes and goes to all the best restaurants and clubs in Milan. But Dan has to live a healthy life - he never smokes and only occasionally drinks alcohol… .

TRAVELLING

Those who live in the country like to find themselves in large cities with their shops, cinemas, *crowds of people. City-dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains *with nothing to do but walking and bathing, laying in the sun. Most travellers and holiday makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them - beautiful views of waterfalls, forests, unusual plants and animals. These photos will remind them of the happy time of holiday.

Modern life is impossible without travelling. There are many ways of travelling-by train, by plain, by ship, on foot. Everyone chooses his favourite one.

My sister’ll go to France in September, if she has a holiday. Her favourite way is travelling by planе. It is more comfortable, more convenient and, of course, quicker than any other method. There is none of the dust and dirt of a railway or car journey, none of the trouble of changing from train to steamer and then to another train.

But many people make their choice on travelling by train as with a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. Travelling by train is of course slower than by air but it also has its advantages.

If you are going to travel by train it will be better to book seats *beforehand because many people are fond of travelling by train. There are some reasons why people choose railroad. Train is the cheap means of travelling. If it is summer outside it will be better to think of your trip before the vacation starts. To understand how true this is, you only have to go to a railway station. There you will see hundreds of people hurrying to catch a train. You’ll waste a lot of time standing near the booking-office trying to buy a ticket.

Modern trains have very comfortable seats in all passenger cars, and there are sleeping-cars and dining-cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable. You can have a meal in the dining-car if you are hungry; and you can have a wonderful bed in a sleeper if a journey is a long one. If you are early before the train starts you can leave your suit-cases in the compartment and walk up and down the platform. Some people forget when and from which platform and track their train *will be off. They can always ask for the track, platform and train numbers at the railroad station information bureau and also get information about next trains and their schedules. There are express, slow and long-distance trains. If you want to go somewhere and get there as quickly as possible you’d better know that express trains only stop at the largest stations while slow trains stop at all stations.

You can get to far countries only by a long-distance train.

Once you are in your compartment you have to ask the guide to bring in *the bedding and you can occupy your berth. During your way on the train you can read newspapers, books, drink tea and communicate with your neighbours or

sleep. If you don’t sleep, you’ll see the beauty of nature. Just look out of the window. I *envy the tourists that can travel often because I think that they study geography travelling and visiting different parts of the world. If I had more time and money I would travel a lot.

Travelling by ship is also very popular now. It is very pleasant to feel the deck of the ship under the feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in the face and hear the cry of the seagulls. If I didn’t *fell sick I would travel by sea with my friends. Though my friends were not satisfied with their last voyage. It would have been all right, if it hadn’t rained all the time. If they had gone two weeks earlier they would have had better weather.

Many people like to travel by car. It is interesting too, because you can see many sights in a short time, you can stop when and where you like, you do not have to buy tickets or carry your suitcases.

As for me I’d like to have a coach tour to some foreign country. Coach tours are planned and I’ll have a chance to do a lot of sightseeing and have a good rest at the same time.

NOTES

*crowds- толпы

*with nothing to do but- ничего не делая, кроме как

*beforehand- заранее

*will be off- отправляется

*the bedding - постельные принадлежности

*envy- завидовать

*fell sick- страдать морской болезнью
