The National Anthem is “Advance Australia Fair”. King George V granted the coat of

arms of Australia in 1912. On the coat of arms, is the shield containing the badges of six states. The supporters are native Australian fauna, they are a kangaroo and an emus. It marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip of the British Royal Navy, commanded a fleet of 11 ships into port Jackson (Sydney Cove).

THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

“ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR”

Australia all let us rejoice.

For we are young and free;

We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;

Our home is girt by sea;

Our land abounds in nature’s gifts

Of beauty rich and rare;

In history’s page, let every stage

Advance Australia’s Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,

Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross

We’ll toil hearts and hands;

To make this Commonwealth of ours

Renowned of all the lands;

For those who’ve come across the seas

We’ve boundless plains to share;

With courage let us all combine

To advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,

Advance Australia fair.

Canberra

Canberra is Australia’s National Capital. It is not the largest city .Its population only about 300,000 people. When the Australian States federated in 1901, it was decided to build

an entirely new city so that the Federal Government could have complete control over its own seat and also be removed from the influence of any of States capitals. Only in 1908, after a fierce debate, the present Australian Capital Territory was chosen.

The design of the city formed the subject of a worldwide competition (in 1911) which was won by a Chicago architect. The focal point of the plan was Capital Hill from which all the main avenues were to radiate. Many of the streets were seen as lying in concentric circles.

Visitors will be interested to inspect the public buildings. The most important is Parliament House, containing the two Chambers for the Senate and the House of Representative. Within the building there are many paintings,

statues, busts and works of art and of historical interest connected with the development of Australia.

The Australian National University, which stands on a site of some 200 acres in the north of the city, was founded in 1946, and is devoted to a research in physical sciences, medicine, social sciences and Pacific studies.

Other notable sights are: the Australian Institute of Anatomy; the Commonwealth National Library; “Yarralumba”, the home of the Governor-General; the School of Forestry, the Commonwealth Observatory and the Australian War Memorial.
