Introduction

Why is reading so important?

Books have always played an important role in human lives. From books we get to know culture, life and interests of people in different periods of civilization. Reading develops intelligence, memory, imagination.

Through reading in a foreign language a person enriches his knowledge of the language. He gets acquainted with the countries where the language is spoken thus getting a better understanding of other cultures. People who read a lot develop a broader vocabulary and show a better performance at school.

Unfortunately nowadays people are not very keen on reading. They would prefer to spend their leisure time chatting with friends on the Internet or just browsing it instead of reading an interesting book.

At our research we put forward the following aims:

·   to prove that reading in a foreign language adds to the knowledge of the language

·  to consider the “Harry Potter Phenomenon”i.e. theway it influences young people minds

The objectives that we pursued while working at this paper are the following:

·   to find out the peculiarities of the translation of the J. K. Rowling’s novel  «Harry Potter And Deathly Hallows»

·   to find out the teenagers’ attitude towards reading (J. K. Rowling`s novel in particular).

The subject of the investigation:

·   J. K. Rowling’s novel  «Harry Potter And Deathly Hallows»

The object of the investigation:

· reading as one of the ways of making learning a foreign language most effective

The hypothesis of the research is the following:

Reading books in a foreign language is one of the most effective ways of learning the language.  It enlarges the reader’s vocabulary; improves pronunciation; provides the elementary translation skills. All these things play an important role while learning the language and provoke interest in it.

Methods of the research:

· The analysis of literature on methods of teaching English

· Conclusion oriented research

· Analytical reading research

· The questionnaire of teenagers on their attitude towards reading

The main part

There are a lot of different ways learning a foreign language. But I’m most attracted by learning through reading as it’s both interesting and effective.

To begin with I would like to say that I have always been fond of reading.

The books about Harry Potter written by the outstanding English writer J. K. Rowling have a great moral value because they are filled with compassion, warmth of humanity and beauty. Moreover J. K. Rowling managed to reveal human nature in a powerful way. The writer managed to create remarkable characters. To tell the truth for teenagers like me they became real models to follow. They excite our imagination and make us think about very important things – honesty, faithfulness, devotedness to friends. While reading these marvelous novels we can’t but get fascinated by the fates of the leading characters.

The Harry Potter Phenomenon

Some words about the writer and her novels.

We know that Rowling’s manuscript about Harry Potter was rejected by a number of publishers before its publication as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in Britain in 1997. The book about a young boy who learns of his magic abilities at age 11 and then attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry appeared in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone the following year.

From the beginning Rowling planned the Harry Potter series as a seven-book sequence, one book for each year of Harry’s secondary school career at Hogwarts. The second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, was published in Britain in 1998 and a year later in the United States. A third volume, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, appeared in both countries in 1999. By then, the Harry Potter books had been translated into nearly 30 languages.

A fourth volume, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, reached bestseller lists weeks before its publication in July 2000. A fifth volume, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, appeared in 2003. It broke publishing records by selling 5 million copies on June 21, the date of its publication. The previous Harry Potter book had set the earlier record in 2000, with 3 million copies sold upon publication. The sixth installment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was released in July 2005. A seventh—and what Rowling said would be the final—installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was published in July 2007.

The Harry Potter books combine two powerful genres—the school story and magical fantasy. J.K.Rowling does not avoid serious issues such as self-sacrifice and death.

The popularity of the movies has reinforced the Harry Potter publishing phenomenon.

As for me I read almost all the books mentioned and watched the films shot on them. But to tell the truth Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has beenthe only one I’ve read in Englishso far.

Which of the J. K. Rowling‘s characters get me most fascinated?

I reread Harry Potter not just because it’s one of my favorite series, but because I feel as if the characters are some of my closest friends with whom I go on a journey through seven books. Especially the golden trio: Harry, Ron and Hermione. From Harry’s stubborn heroism to Ron’s loyalty and hospitality, to Hermione’s cleverness and leadership, these three friends perfectly balance one another.

Harry and his friends are ambitious, confident and brave. They set up goals and do their best to achieve them. They never give up. But an ability to get through difficulties is not their only feature. Their deeds are generous and noble, their feelings are high and beautiful. They make their lives worth living and I cannot help admiring their ability to sacrifice their own well-being and happiness for the sake of others.
Here are some examples which prove how close they are.

They share whatever they have.

From the moment Harry meets Ron he is so excited to have a friend to share everything with that he immediately buys as much candy as he can for them to split while on the Hogwarts Express.
