THANKSGIVING ON THE FARM

When I was a child, we lived on the farm near the town. There were many other relatives who lived near us. Every year they all came to visit us. We worked for days to prepare for the holiday. We washed all our best clothes – we called these dress and suits “our Sunday dress”. The men cut extra wood for all the cooking, for we had an old wood-burning stove. Father always killed the biggest turkey. Finally, the whole family drove into town to buy food that we couldn’t produce on the farm, like coffee and sugar.

On Thanksgiving morning the women got up early to begin cooking. Mother stuffed the turkey with bread and onions, and then she roasted it.

Aunt Ellen made a dozen of pumpkin pies. Aunt Ann picked up autumn flowers for the centre of the table. She also brought in vegetables to eat with turkey and pies.

IN THE NICK OF TIME

The steamer is leaving. The passengers are walking on the deck waiting for the start. One of them notices a cyclist in the distance. The man is riding in the direction of the steamer. He is in a terrible hurry. He is trying to catch the steamer, but his chance is small indeed. The sailors’ hands are on the gangway.

The deck becomes a scene of excitement. Some are sure he won’t catch the steamer. Others hope he will. In the very nick of time the cyclist jumps off his bicycle and is running up the gangway welcomed by laughter and loud cries, “Hurrah!”

The man is paying little attention to the greetings. “Cast off!” he cries in a loud commanding voice, for he is the captain of the steamer.

My grandfather

My grandfather is 96 years old. When he was born, Queen Victoria was still on the throne. Since then, there have been four different kings and a queen on the throne of the United Kingdom. He has met the Queen on several occasions. In 1959 he was a soldier in New Zealand when she came to visit, and in 1972 he went to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

He has travelled a lot, especially in the Far East. He has seen the Taj Mahal in India and the Pyramids in Egypt. He has hunted big game in Africa, and has ridden a camel across the Sahara Desert. He says that the most beautiful place he has visited is Kathmandu in Nepal.

He has been married twice. His first wife died when she was 32. He met his second wife while he was travelling round France by bike. He and his wife, Eleanor, have been married for 50 years, and they have lived in the same cottage in the same country since they got married.

He says that he has never been ill in his life. He has had a cold sometimes, of course, but nothing serious. The secret of good health, according to my grandfather, is exercise. He goes swimming every day. He also has a glass of whisky every night! He has certainly had an interesting life. I hope he lives to be a hundred!
