The Space Race

In the 1960s there was a race between the Soviet Union and the United States to be the first country into space. It cost a lot of money. The United States spent about $100 billion. Both countries used German scientists to develop their rockets.

The Space Race began in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik. They sent a dog into space on Sputnik 2. Then, in 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. He went round the Earth once. It took 108 minutes.

Americans would land a man on the moon. In 1966 a Russian spacecraft landed on the moon, but there were no astronauts on board. In 1968 Apollo 8 orbited the moon. Then, in 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the moon, and Armstrong and Aldrin walked on its surface.

The Space Race ended in 1975 when the Russian Soyuz 19 met and joined America's Apollo 18 in space.

So the Russians won the race to put the first man in space, but the Americans put the first man on the moon.

The space race cost a lot of money only to the USA.

There were no astronauts on board of Apollo 11.

President Kennedy ended the space race in 1969.

The First Air Journey

On July 25, 1909, a Frenchman, Louis Bleriot, became the first man to complete an air journey from Calais, in the north of France, to Dover, in the south of England. People thought that such a journey was impossible.

The flight wasn’t easy. Mr. Bleriot, a 37-year-old engineer, couldn’t swim, so he didn’t want to come down in the Channel. He couldn’t walk very well because of an injury to his leg, and he didn’t have a compass.

On the morning of the 25th, he took off from a field at the edge of a cliff. It took 37 minutes to complete the 22-mile journey. The plane flew at 40 miles per hour at an altitude of 250 feet.

Everything went well until he flew into fog. ‘I continued flying for ten minutes, but I couldn’t see the land. It was the most dangerous part of the flight. Finally, I saw the land,’ he told reporters.

When he got to Dover, he saw a French journalist waving a flag. He landed on a field.

The news quickly went round the world, and Mr. Bleriot’s flight was celebrated in London and Paris. He won a prize of £1,000.

The crossing was the start of modern aviation.

The first completed air flight took place in the summer of 1909.

Louis Bleriot had problems with his back.

The journey was 40 miles long.

A French journalist gave him a flag.

The news about the flight quickly arrived in London and Paris.

The First Man on the Moon

On 16 July 1969, Apollo 11 lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. There were three astronauts - Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The rocket took three days to complete the 250,000 miles to the moon, travelling at six miles per second (21,600 miles an hour).

The lunar module landed on the Sea of Tranquillity in the evening on 20 July.

It was time for the astronauts to rest, but they were too excited to sleep. Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. As Armstrong took his first steps, he said the famous words, ‘That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’

Armstrong and Aldrin spent two and a half hours walking on the moon. They collected samples and set up scientific equipment. Finally, they put up a US flag. After 22 hours on the moon, the lunar module lifted off and flew up to join the rocket that took them back to Earth. They left an inscription:

‘Here men from the planet earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969. We came in peace for all mankind.’

This flight was the beginning of man’s exploration of space.

The first man set his foot on the moon in the summer of 1969.

When Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the astronauts had a rest.

The distance to the moon is 21,600 miles.

Twitter

Twitter is an Internet service for social networking. You can write very short text messages called tweets that have a maximum of 140 characters. Researchers collected four million Twitter messages (tweets) over seven days. They looked at 200,000 tweets from all over the world. They discovered:

• 60% of the tweets were in English

• 9% were in Japanese, the second most popular language

• 5% of all tweets came from the top 100 users who posted 200-3,000 tweets a day

So what are people talking about on Twitter? Is it really just a lot of boring chat about 'What I'm doing at the moment', or are people also talking about more important things? Is there any serious discussion?

First the research company counted the most common sentences, and they discovered that the most popular were ' I'm working' and ' I’m sleepy'.

A smiley face J was also very popular. This suggested that most tweeters are tired but happy workaholics! The researchers also found that there is not one main reason why people use Twitter, but there are three main types of conversation: everyday events, exchanging views on a programme they watch, discussing serious topics like politics or disasters.

You can write more than 140 characters in a Twitter message.

It’s a free service.

Researchers collected 100 million messages over a year.

Most tweets are in Japanese.

The most common sentence is ‘I’m smiling’.
