At the cinemas this week

In his interview to Mitch Forman actor Russ Sparks, the star of a new independent film. speaks about his new film, The University of Life.

I play a young lawyer. He lives in the centre of New York City, he’s rich, he has a great apartment, he has a lovely family but he isn’t happy. He has trouble sleeping, and he often works very late. Then, one day, his life changes when he becomes friends with an old man at the city hospital.

Then he gives up his job at the law firm, and he becomes a song-writer and jazz pianist.

The title of the film is The University of Lifebecause the old man tells him simple stories about his life. The lawyer learns a lot from these stories – things he didn’t learn at expensive private schools and university. These stories help him to understand himself and be happy.

At the end of the film the lawyer loves his new job. He also has time to enjoy his family again, thanks to the help of the old man. Saleh al-Ghaoui plays the old man. I love working with him. I learn a lot from him about acting, too.

The First Air Journey

On July 25, 1909, a Frenchman, Louis Bleriot, became the first man to complete an air journey from Calais, in the north of France, to Dover, in the south of England. People thought that such a journey was impossible.

The flight wasn’t easy. Mr. Bleriot, a 37-year-old engineer, couldn’t swim, so he didn’t want to come down in the Channel. He couldn’t walk very well because of an injury to his leg, and he didn’t have a compass.

On the morning of the 25th, he took off from a field at the edge of a cliff. It took 37 minutes to complete the 22-mile journey. The plane flew at 40 miles per hour at an altitude of 250 feet.

Everything went well until he flew into fog. ‘I continued flying for ten minutes, but I couldn’t see the land. It was the most dangerous part of the flight. Finally, I saw the land,’ he told reporters.

When he got to Dover, he saw a French journalist waving a flag. He landed on a field.

The news quickly went round the world, and Mr. Bleriot’s flight was celebrated in London and Paris. He won a prize of £1,000.

The crossing was the start of modern aviation.
