A Sea Horse
Alex has a big tank in his room. He keeps tropical fish in his tank. These fish are of beautiful colours. Alex bought his first fish a year ago. Now he has ten. He spends all his pocket money on them.
Yesterday he bought a new pet. It was very expensive. It cost £50 (pounds).
While Alex was going to the pet shop, his mother and his sister were sitting in the kitchen. They were waiting for Alex because they wanted to see his new pet. Sally, his sister, opened the door when he rang the doorbell. She saw his new pet and said, “Mum! Alex has bought a horse!” She was joking. It was not a horse. It was a sea horse. Alex was happy, “Look! Isn't it beautiful?”
Safari Parks
A safari park is like a large zoo, where the animals live in natural conditions (естественные условия). There are several safari parks in Britain and they are very popular places for visit. One of the most famous is at Windsor, which is close to London airport.
You can visit some parts of the safari park on foot. Here you can see the animals that are not dangerous: giraffes, zebras, camels and antelopes. The animals walk around as if they were (как если бы они были в…) in Africa.
Safari parks also have lions, tigers, leopards and other dangerous animals. They cannot live with the other animals, because they would (они бы…) eat them. They would also eat the visitors, so they have to drive (поэтому им приходится ездить в машине) through the parts where these animals live. You must not (нельзя) open the windows and you must not get out of the car.
Safari parks are much better than zoos, because the animals do not live in small cages.
Children’s Hobbies
Emily Jones is eleven and her hobby is collecting dolls. Four years ago her aunt gave her a doll from India. It had a beautiful dress, long dark hair and gold earrings. Emily loved it and started collecting dolls from other countries. Now she has more than fifty dolls in her bedroom.
Jim Hobbs loves sport and his favourite sport is basketball. Six month ago he watched a basketball match on TV and he liked it very much. Now he plays every day. He plays at school and he plays at home. He has big posters of basketball players on his bedroom walls and he reads magazines about basketball. There is one problem – Jim is not very tall. But he is a good player. He plays in his school team, and last week they won their first match.

Dolphins
Dolphins live in water but they are not fish. They need air to breathe. They can stay under the water for many minutes but then they must come up to the surface. Some dolphins live in the sea; some dolphins live in rivers. They like warm water the best. Sometimes dolphins swim close to ships. They jump out of water again and again. They can swim very fast – up to 55 kilometres an hour. A number of dolphins swimming together are called a “school”. There are small dolphins and big dolphins: some are two or three metres long. Dolphins are not dangerous. They are very clever animals and they love playing. Dolphins have smiling faces.
The Circus Monkey
The music plays. The lights shine. The children laugh and talk. The monkey runs into the circus ring. He wears a purple jacket and a funny little hat. He runs, he jumps, and he walks on his hands. He stands on a big ball and holds an umbrella. He rides a pink bicycle and plays a trumpet. He waves to the children. They laugh and clap.
At night, the monkey looks through the bars of his cage and sees the moon. He shuts his eyes and sleeps. He sees a forest, dark and green. He feels warm rain on his face. He hears a parrot, a snake, a tiger. He swings and swings and swings through the trees.
The Bear in School
One day a boy found a brown bear-cub in the forest. He was very little and looked like a puppy. The boy carried him home.
Every day the boy went to school. The bear-cub went with him and waited for the boy in the field.
At first, the other boys were afraid of the bear-cub, but soon they became great friends. Many of them brought food to school and gave the bear-cub some bread and butter.
The bear-cub lived with the boy for a long time. But one day he went to the forest and did not come back. Everybody was very sorry for the bear-cub.
Many years passed. New schoolboys came to the old school. One very cold winter day the door opened, and a large brown bear walked into the classroom. But the bear did not touch the pupils. He walked up to the fire and warmed himself. He felt quite at home. He was very glad to get into such a warm room.

A Day in the Life of Simon Carrot
First of all, I must tell you about myself. I am thirteen and I am in the third class at a Grammar school in Manchester
What a terrible day! I woke up late and didn’t have time to eat my breakfast. I couldn’t find my books or my school cap. At last, I found my books in the bathroom; and at last, I found my cap — my dog was playing with it! I was nearly late for school.
The first lesson on Monday morning is Math’s. What a terrible way to start the week! Mr Green, the Maths teacher, took our homework. He saw that my exercise - book was dirty. He was very angry and gave me a bad mark for it.
Then he gave us some tasks to do. I sat next to Jane, who was fat and not very pleasant — but very good at Maths. I asked her to tell me the answers, but she didn`t want.
The next lesson was French. I like French. It’s nice to be able to talk to somebody in another language.
Brother and Sister
Once there was a man who had two children, a boy and a girl. The boy was good-looking, but the girl was not. One day they found a mirror and for the first time saw what they look like. The boy was very glad. He said to his sister "What a nice face I have! I look much nicer than you do!” The girl did not like what he said. She was very angry and began to beat her brother "Go away”, she cried. Their father saw them and said to the boy, "you must always be as good as you look”. And to the girl he said "My dear, if you help everyone and you do your best to please, everyone will love you”. The moral is - It is better to be good than to be good-looking.
London Bridge
London Bridge is two thousand years old. The first bridge was of wood. Then people built the bridge of stone and called it London Bridge. There were houses and shops on it and people paid money when they crossed the bridge. In 1831, a new bridge rose in the place of the first bridge. But the city grew very quickly and in 1960 the people of London wanted to build a large new bridge at that place. A very rich American bought the old London Bridge as people buy old things. He wanted to show the old bridge in America to people for money. The people of London liked their old London Bridge. But the city needed money for the new bridge. The American brought the parts of the bridge on a ship to Arizona in the USA. Workers built the old bridge but there was no river under it now, only a street. No ships pass under it now, only people walk along the street and look at the old bridge. In 1973 the New London Bridge was opened in the place of the old bridge over the Thames.

A VILLAGE SCHOOL
The Greens are a British family. Mr. Green is a builder and Mrs. Green is a housewife. There are three children in the family: a son and two daughters. Mike is thirteen years old, Sandy is twelve and Kate is ten.
All the three children are pupils. Mike is at the boys’ school; his sisters are at a school for girls. Mike is a tall boy. He is clever. He is a very good pupil.
Sandy has dark hair and hazel eyes. She is a pretty girl, she is clever and a good pupil. Her sister Kate is a nice girl with long fair hair and large blue eyes. She is good at music.
The Greens are in Australia now. Mr. Green’s uncle is a farmer. His house and farm in Australia are in a village. The house is big. It is on a hill. It is summer now. In Australia January, February, March and April are summer months.
The school in the village is small. In fact, it is a one-room school. There is only one teacher for all the pupils. The garden around the school is very beautiful. The Greens are fond of the farm and the school in the village.
