Work of an In-patient Department
When patients are admitted to the hospital first of all they are received by a nurse on duty at the reception ward. She fills in patients’ case histories in which she writes down their names, age, place of work, occupation, address and the initial diagnosis made by a doctor at the polyclinic. Then a doctor on duty examines the hospitalized patients to decide what department the patients are to be admitted to. At the department the doctor asks questions to fill in the patient’s case history. It must include the information about the patient’s parents, previous diseases, and performed operations, traumas and current patient’s complaints and symptoms.

The doctor usually examines patient thoroughly. Then he prescribes to make the laboratory tests. If it is necessary the doctor may ask the patient to do X-ray examination or to undergo physiotherapy treatment. The information on the physical examination of the patient, the results of all laboratory tests, the description of the course of the disease with any changes in the symptoms and the condition of the patient, the administered medicines in their exact doses must be written down in the case history.
There are different departments in the hospital: Cardiology, Gastroenterology, General surgery, Gynaecology, Nephrology, Neurology, Radiotherapy. But their work is similar. At the in-patient departments the nurses on duty take the patients’ temperature, give them intramuscular and intravenous injections and the prescribed remedies. The doctors make the daily rounds of the wards to examine all the patients and to administer different procedures. The specialists from other departments may be invited to consult the patient.

A physical examination, medical examination, or clinical examination (more popularly known as a check-up) is the process to investigate the body of a patient for signs of disease. It generally follows the taking of the medical history. It aids to determine the correct diagnosis and to make the treatment plan.
