Ex 1. Read the information about Blue Bay Design. Is it better to have a boss in an organization?Would you feel comfortable working in an organization like this?

Blue Bay Design is a company in the south of England, which produces printed material for local businesses. The company has no hierarchy and no separate departments. One of the staff of six, Ric Samson, says “We’ve never had any serious problems between people in our organization – nobody’s the boss here”.

Ex 2. Different companies have different cultures and ways of working. Complete these sentences with the items in brackets. One of the items cannot be used.

Ex 7. In a break from work you meet one of the other employees. Use the expressions from speaking to talk about what you do in your job. Begin like this:

Ex 12. a) Now listen to Iulia, Sam, Andy, and Trisha describing their jobs. Number the jobs in the table in 1 in the order yon hear them.

b) Listen again and complete the sentences below with the phrases in the box. All the phrases describe responsibilities. Change the verb forms as necessary.

KEY PHRASES: be responsible for, deal with, take care of, be in charge of, make sure, report to

JULIA: We have offices in a lot of countries, so, often I only have to arrange the shipping. When there is no local office, I......... marketing our products and packaging them, as well as arranging shipping – everything really.

Ex 13. Work in pairs and discuss what you know about Ford and its history. Now read the magazine article.

FORD OF BRITAIN

When did all start?

In the spring of 1896 engineer Henry Ford built his first horseless carriage. In 1903 Ford, backed by 12 local business men, formed the Ford motor company which later pioneered modern production line techniques.

When did it come to Britain?

In 1911 Ford’s first assembly plant outside North America opened at Trafford Park, Manchester and in 1929 work started on building the Dagenham plant where the first Model AA truck rolled off the line at 1.15 p.m. on October 1, 1931.
