Official Style (Style of Official Documents)

The main function of this style is communicative and lies in expressing certain relation between governments, parties, companies, the state and its citizens, between the citizens. Official documents reflecting these relations may assume various forms: official statements, pacts, charters, treaties, business correspondence.

The main features of the official style:

1. The words are used in their direct logical meaning. The language of documents abounds in clichés, terms and set expressions which are stable and permanent: the above mentioned, in accordance with, on behalf of.

2. Some archaic forms are found here: thereof, hereby, herewith, therefrom.

3. Foreign words, especially of Latin and French origin are used: status quo, persona non grata.

4. Different abbreviations, shortenings and conventional formulas are used: MP (member of Parliament), Gvt (government), Ltd.

5. Each document has its own compositional design, the text s clearly subdivided into paragraphs which are logically arranged according to the order-of-priority principle.

6. Most documents (pacts, charters, treaties) have a considerable size but still they may consist of 2-3 or even one sentence organized into well-developed paragraphs with parallel clauses and infinitival, gerundial and participial constructions.

7. Graphical means: italics, bold type and capital lettering are widely used.
