St Petersburg is a town of three seas. The Neva is navigable and even sea vessels pass along it. The cannels and rivers link the Neva to the BalticSea, White and Caspian Seas. Ships not only come to St Petersburg; they are also built here. The Baltic Factory and the Admiralty Shipyards are well-known. The first shipyard was founded by Peter the Great. Its headquarters –the Admiralty—is a wonderful monument of architecture in the city center. St Petersburg is a home of several naval institutions. Their graduates have gone on to become naval heroes, commanders , voyagers and explorers. It was here the first Russian naval victory ( over the Sweden) celebrated in 1721 and the tricentenary of the Russian Navy in June 1996.
