London — the Capital of the UK

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is more than 11 000 000 people. London is situated on the river Thames.

The city is very old and beautiful. It was founded more than two thousand years ago. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the Westminster, the West End and the East End.

The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. The Westminster is the aristocratic official part of London. It includes Buckingham Palace, where the Queen lives, and the Houses of Parliament.

The West End is the most beautiful part of London. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parks and houses are situated there.

The East End is an industrial district of London. There are many factories and the Port of London there.

London has many places of interest. One of them is the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British Government. There one can see the famous Tower Clock Big Ben, the symbol of London. Big Ben is the real bell which strikes every quarter of an hour. Another place of interest is Buckingham Palace. It’s the residence of the Queen. There are many other places of interest in London: Trafalgar Square, Regent’s Park, Westminster Abbey and, of course, the British Museum. It’s impossible to describe all places of interest.

Westminster Abbey is a symbol of English tradition at its best. The coronations of nearly all English kings and queens since William the Conqueror have taken place here. Many of them are buried within the Abbey. Beneath the roof of this Gothic building there are also the graves and memorial slabs of statesmen, philosophers, men of letters and other distinguished people. Here you can see memorials to Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Geoffrey Chaucer, Alfred Tennyson, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy.

I want to tell you about Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge was opened in 1894. It takes its name from the Tower of London. The hydraulic mechanism can raise and lower the bridge in about one and a half minutes. The covered walkway between the two towers is opened to the public and offers a spectacular view of London.
The city’s greatest monument, St.Paul’s Cathedral was built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1675 and 1710 to replace the old Cathedral that was largely destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. Christopher Wren is buried there. Among the many memorials to famous men within the Cathedral are the tombs of Wellington, Victor of Waterloo, and Nelson, hero of Trafalgar.

The Houses of Parliament are the places where the British government seats. These are beautiful buildings with 2 towers and a very big clock called Big Ben.

The English people built the Clock Tower in 1858. The clock has 4 faces and a very big loud bell. The man in charge of the building was Sir Benjamin Hall. The man was very tall and the workers called him Big Ben. So they called the clock Big Ben too.

The Tower of London. It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. It is a museum now. There are a lot of interesting collections in the Tower of London. The ravens are another famous sight. The legend says that London will be rich while ravens live here.

Trafalgar Square. On the column in the center there is a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. To the left of it you can see the National Gallery. It has a fine collection of European paintings.

Piccadilly Circus. It is difficult to say what the real center of London is, but many people choose Piccadilly Circus. It is called the circus because it is round, not square like many other places. It is the meeting point of 6 streets. It is famous for its lights. It is always crowded, especially in the evenings.

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of Her Majesty the Queen and her family. It isn’t open to the public. The first monarch who took residence there was Queen Victoria. When Her Majesty is in residence the Royal Standards flies over the east of Buckingham Palace.

At Buckingham Palace I stopped at the game.

And explained to the sentry why I was late.

A ballad of Stonehedge.

Three thousands years before Christ was a child,

England was beautiful, young and wild.

There were people, forests and rivers there,

And the magic stones hung in the air.

The people who brought then were strong and brave,

And under these stones they found their graves.

Where did they come from?  Where did they go?

Who were these people? We’ll never know.

Now these days are gone and the people are gone,

But the midsummer sunrise still shines on the stone.

And the midwinter sunset still comes with the rain,

And Stonehedge greets them on Salisbury Plain

Ø I went to London.

Ø What impressed you greatly?

Ø When I came to London I thought something was wrong with the traffic. In London and in other towns of England buses and cars go on the left side of street, and not on the right. So, when English people want to cross the first they must look to the right and then to the left.

Ø I have read that the English are a nation of stay-at - homes. Do they prefer to live in small houses built close together with beautiful gardens around them?
