Live updates: U.S. braces for gloomy jobs figures; global pressure mounts for inquiry into coronavirus origins

Many people admire the paintings and sculptures that artists create. Some very beautiful paintings and sculptures were created by two men who lived in the same country at the same time. These men were Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. They both lived in Italy around the year 1500.

Leonardo da Vinci is most famous for his painting called the Mona Lisa. This is perhaps the best-known painting in the world. The Mona Lisa shows the head and shoulders of a dark-haired woman. When people look at this painting, they are often captivated by her smile and by her eyes, which have a look of mystery.

Another painting of Leonardo’s is called The Last Supper. This painting shows a famous scene from the Christian religion. In this painting, Jesus Christ is seated at the middle of a long table, with his followers (the disciples) seated around him. Many of the paintings that were created at this time have a religious theme.

Leonardo was not only an artist; he was also interested in engineering. He actually worked for some time as an advisor to a military leader, helping him to develop new machines for use in war. Leonardo also made rough drawings of machines that are similar to those that were invented much later, such as submarines and helicopters. Obviously, Leonardo was an extremely creative man.

Michelangelo was about 23 years younger than Leonardo. In addition to being a painter, Michelangelo was also a sculptor, and many experts consider him the greatest sculptor of all time. One of his most famous sculptures is David, which is a statue of a young man who was a famous figure in the Bible. Another great sculpture of Michelangelo’s is called the Pieta. The Pieta shows Mary, the mother of Jesus, holding the body of her son across her lap.

Michelangelo is also famous for painting the ceiling of a church known as the Sistine Chapel. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Julius, asked Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of this new church. This project required many years of hard work, and the Pope complained that it took too long. However, when the work was finished, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was covered with beautiful paintings of many scenes from the Bible.

Fortunately, many of the works of Leonardo and of Michelangelo can still be seen today in the art galleries of Europe. During the past 500 years, the color of the paintings had faded somewhat, but in recent years, some work has been done to restore the paintings to their original appearance.

The Earth is the planet on which we live. It is the third planet outward from the sun. It lies between Venus and Mars. The Earth has a satellite, the Moon. The Earth moves at an average speed of 18.5 miles a second and it makes a complete circuit in a solar year.

We can only guess about the origin of the Earth. One of the theories is that a big group of meteorites condensed. Most scientists believe that the age of the Earth is over 5,000 million years.

There was a time when there were dinosaurs everywhere on earth. The biggest of them weighed about 78 tonnes — as much as 20 adult elephants. They were 23 metres long and 12 metres high.

Most of these huge creatures ate plants. Their diet was half a tonne of food a day. But their brain was only as big as a nut.

Smaller creatures could run as fast as a racehorse. Dinosaurs disappeared about 64 million years ago.

Clamor for an international inquiry into the pandemic’s origins is growing, with the United States and Australia leading the charge. Australia’s Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said Thursday that all members of the World Health Organization should cooperate with such a probe, which he discussed with French and German leaders this week. Ruling-party lawmakers in Britain, meanwhile, are calling for a harder line on China over its initial cover-up of the crisis.

Here are some significant developments:

· Rick Bright, the former director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, said Wednesday that he had been ousted from his position because he resisted efforts to push hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for covid-19. The agency is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, and has been involved in efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine and treatment.

· President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order restricting certain kinds of immigration for 60 days. The measure contains broad carve-outs for some groups, including medical professionals, farm workers and family members and spouses of U.S. citizens, making it more narrow than the all-inclusive ban that he had trumpeted on Twitter earlier this week.

· As experts warn that states rushing to lift restrictions could be making a deadly error, President Trump said that he disagreed with a decision by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) to allow many small business to reopen this week. Meanwhile, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has come under fire for saying that casinos should reopen, with the state’s largest union slamming the proposal as “outrageous" on Wednesday.

· The Trump administration said Wednesday that it will offer an unspecified amount of federal aid to hospitals that treat uninsured coronavirus patients.

· New data from New York’s largest hospital system shows that 88 percent of coronavirus patients who were placed on ventilators didn’t survive, confounding early expectations about how to treat the virus. Meanwhile, doctors nationwide are beginning to notice that a mysterious complication involving blood clots is showing up in many fatal cases.

· Turkey continues to imprison writers, journalists and human rights lawyers deemed to be dissidents, even as tens of thousands of other prisoners are released from jail amid a worsening coronavirus outbreak.
