Task 1. Read and translate.
Cultural Life of Youth.
How do young people spend their spare time? What leisure activities do they prefer? These and other questions were asked in a sociological survey. The results of the opinion poll conducted among young people living in big cities and in the country add up to the following hierarchy of pastimes: music in combination with such forms of group activities as discos, concerts, and cafe-cum-club comes first, followed by the Internet, theatre and reading. Then come films, museums, amateur arts and engineering, and, finally, TV and classical music. The questionnaire, circulated among pupils of 9-11 forms, students and young workers, has shown that the arts are regarded second only to contacts with friends.
Most young people admit they do not know how to plan their leisure. According to the poll, the actual priorities are as follows: TV comes first, followed by Internet, reading, films, listening to records, radio, going out to dances and discos; then come concerts, museums, amateur arts, and finally theatre.
Young people's recent growing cultural standards make themselves feel primarily in the choice of cultural values. Of course, they like to be entertained (by watching TV shows, reading detective stories, etc.). But they certainly know how to find their way amid the great variety of cultural values, and they know how to tell genuine art from imitation.
A few more words about music, which plays a very important part in young people's lives. Rock is certainly more popular than classical music. Russian pop groups who play original music and meaningful texts have an especially large following. Russian girls and boys are getting increasingly interested in the leisure activities which encourage self-expression and growth of personality.

§1. Время Past Simple используется для обозначения действия, которое произошло в определенное время в прошлом и время совершения которого уже истекло.
Случаи употребления Past Simple:
1) Указание на простое действие в прошлом:
I saw Jeremy in the bank.
2) Для описания факта или единичного действия в прошлом:
Слова сигналы: yesterday (вчера), the day before yesterday (позавчера), a long time ago (давно), five weeks ago (пять недель назад), the other day (на днях), in 1999 (в 1999 году), on Friday (в пятницу), last month (в прошлом месяце) и другие.
Образование Past Simple.
Утвердительные предложения:
1) Для того, чтобы поставить английский глагол во время Past Simple, нужно использовать его «вторую форму». Для большинства глаголов она образуется прибавлением окончания -ed:
I / You / He/ She/ It / They / We worked.
I worked (work + ed ) as a policeman last year – Я работал полицейским в прошлом году.

2) Однако есть также достаточно большая группа неправильных английских глаголов, которые образуют форму прошедшего времени не по общим правилам, для них форму прошедшего времени нужно просто запомнить. (см. таблицу неправильных глаголов стр. 63)

Задание №1. Прочитайте и переведите предложения. Прокомментируйте употребление правильных и неправильных глаголов в Past Simple.
1. A judge announced a verdict. 2. Did you know the last news? – Yes, I did. 3. The policeman helped the old lady. 4. I didn’t want to be a barrister. 5. The girl asked the policeman for help. 6. Barrister was responsible for helping people in court procedures. 7. Tourist gave his passport to immigration control. 8. Witness told everything that he knew about that accident. 9. Prime Minister signed the agreement with the British delegation. 10. I didn’t know about that man. 11. Detective proposed true version on crime committing. 12. The prosecutor spoke angrily. 13. Did you speak to the judge yesterday? – No, I didn’t. 14. In the Courtroom was judge and jurymen. 15. He received an upgrade to lieutenant.
