10 Read the text. In which paragraph can you find out:

1 The name of the actor who played Buffy.              c_d_________

2 What has happened to the other actors since Buffy.     d__________

3 How many series were made.                                 c__________

4 How Buffy came to TV.                              b__________

5 The future for Buffy.                                            f__________

6 The director’s feelings towards TV and film companies. e__________

5 YEARS LATER ... WHERE’S BUFFY NOW? a) In 2003, if you didn’t know who Buffy was, you obviously didn’t live on this planet. All of us were loving or hating the most surprising and, possibly, most financially successful series in TV history. b) A 1992 film, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (for those of you living on that other planet, ‘vampires’ are dead people who drink the blood of the living) was a failure so the creator, Joss Whedon took the idea for a TV series and pitched it to Warner Bros. What did they see? ‘Buffy’ was a mix of horror, soap opera and sitcom, directed towards teenagers and twenty-somethings. It was a completely untried new genre. Most people would have laughed but Warner didn’t. They gave Whedon the chance and the rest is history. c) This groundbreaking TV series ran for seven series with a total of 144 episodes. It would have gone to an eighth series if Sarah Michelle Geller, who played Buffy, hadn’t decided she had had enough. Was that the right career decision? d) The truth is that actors and actresses have found out that life after Buffy has not been as successful as they had expected. Ms Geller has made a few films but nothing as big as Buffy. Two or three of the other actors and actresses have been in films but have done little. The only successful actor has been David Boreanaz, who had his own successful TV series and is now starring in a successful crime series called ‘Bones’. For everyone else it’s all been a little disappointing. e) Joss Whedon must have thought that he had a big future. It hasn’t quite happened for him. The other series he did for Boreanaz, ‘Angel’ was quite successful but his next series ‘Firefly’ failed. The critics loved it but the TV channels didn’t buy into the idea. Since then, however, ‘Firefly’ has been turned into a film which has been very successful. Nevertheless, Joss has felt that he is still not properly understood by the big media companies. f) However, although Buffy can no longer be seen on TV, she is still very much alive. A comic book series is very successful. There are still plans for films and a TV series connected to Buffy and the DVDs still sell very well. The World of Buffy is still with us and Joss Whedon is still very popular in TV land.

Choose one quote and write an essay (250 words)

“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.”

In this essay I would like to discuss the problems of crime and the reasons, why people break the law and therefore become criminals. This question is important today as never before, as unfortunately criminal cases become more and more common in our society. Furthermore, this is one of the most vital issues, which is definitely worth discussing.

To begin with, people commit crimes for personal, social, economic and cultural reasons, which involve an individual in doing criminal activities. The combination of these factors is behind a person who commits crimes. But most often people become criminals, because they do not have an opportunity to live a life they want. And, unfortunately, it may be referred to any sphere of our life. But do we all deserve to live the life we believe in?

Firstly, among social reasons are poor parenting skills, which may include neglect and abuse, peer pressure, drugs and alcohol addiction, and education failure. Very often alcohol and drugs can make people do stupid things that they will later regret in life or make them do things that they never wanted to do, but the outcome of it is irreversible. As a result, they commit different kinds of crimes and are often taken to prison. Secondly, lack of education is one more reason of an anti-social development as well as high rate of unemployment. According to the statistics, after being imprisoned these people are likely to re-offend, so as we can seee, there is no other choice for them except to continue a life of a criminal.

In addition to social reasons there are also economic reasons for people to commit crime. Some of these reasons are poverty and lack of job as a result of education failure. Some people have a large family, but do not have enough money to support it. It also makes people to take the wrong direction. There are also some people who cannot find jobs due to various reasons, which may drive them to steal. People that commit these crimes usually end up in prison.

Nevertheless, imprisonment does not help criminals to realize what positive values in life are, and they are likely to commit a crime again. So, in my opinion, such people should be kept in prison, because imprisonment has already become their lifestyle.

Finally, I can say that it is great to have the right to live the life we believe in. But we may only have this right if our aims, our lifestyle and our beliefs are not dangerous and destructive for other people.
