                                                           Police   anniversary

The impressive statesman and reformer, Sir Robert Peel was born 200 years ago. He was probably best known as the Home Secretary who reorganized the patrols and groups of constables in London at the time to form the Metropolitan Police in 1829.

The members of this force ware initially referred to informally as Peelers after their founder. Later the more informal term Bobby became popular. This informal usage seems to be dying out in modern Britain but you will still hear middle-aged people refer to a policeman as a Bobby, and the word is sometimes used by the media. The police themselves use it to describe officers on the beat. It is very much an informal term used when talking about the police rather than to them. It is certainly not a good idea to use this familiar term yourself to a policeman or woman.

1.1. When sir Robert Peel was born?   1.2.  How was he probably known?       2.3. When did he form the Metropolitan Police? 2.4.Which  more informal term did become popular  later?

READING

YORK, ENGLAND.

York is a beautiful medieval city and for the last thirteen years Brian Larkin has been taking visitors on a unique walking tour around it. His tour is different because, he says, he wants to give people an understanding of how ordinary people really lived in the past. As he takes them down some of York`s darkest side streets and alleyways, Brian gives visitors a running commentary on what life was like without the benefits of electricity or modern plumbing.
