Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Pinocchio

ONCE there was an old man called Gepetto. He was poor and he lived alone in a small town near the sea. He was poor and he lived alone in a small town near the sea. Gepetto was a carpenter. He made things out of wood. One day Gepetto made a boy out of wood. He made a wooden puppet.

‘I will call you Pinocchio!’ said Gepetto.

‘Put me down, Dad!’‘Put me on the floor. I feel full of life and I want to dance.’said the puppet.

‘Oh!’ said Gepetto. ‘You can talk!’

‘Of course I can!’ said Pinocchio.

‘Are you a good boy?’ asked Gepetto.

‘Of course I am!’ said Pinocchio. ‘I’m the best boy in the world!’Then he ran out of the door.

‘Pinocchio, my son!’ cried old Gepetto.‘Come back!’

The little puppet didn’t listen. He just ran. But Gepetto loved his son and so he ran after him.He tried to grab the puppet but Pinocchio ran faster and faster. Gepetto was old and could not catch him, and suddenly he could not see him either.

Pinocchio was all alone and he was hungry, but there was no food. Then he heard a voice. There was a green cricket on the wall, with very bright eyes.

‘Boys should be good to their parents,’ it said.‘Good boys go to school and help people. But you’re not a good boy. You’re a bad wooden puppet!’

Pinocchio shouted at the cricket and chased it away. So now he was alone again. Pinocchio ran out into the dark and knocked on someone’s door. The mancame to the window and poured a bucket of water all over Pinocchio.

‘Here! Have a drink!’ he said. ‘Now go away or I’ll throw the bucket at you too!’

Then Pinocchio began to cry. He was wet and cold and hungry. And he was all alone. Pinocchio ran back to Gepetto room and fell asleep by the fire. Then his wooden feet got burnt. When Gepetto came home, Pinocchio cried.Gepetto wanted to be angry. But then he saw Pinocchio’s poor burnt feet.

Gepetto made Pinocchio some new feet and the little puppet hugged him.

‘Listen, said Gepetto. ‘You must go to school. I want you to workhard and be a good boy. Here’s your writing book!’

He sold his coat to buy him the book. The next morning on his way to school, Pinocchio saw something. It was the famous puppets’ dancing show.

‘Hey!’ said the man. I’ll give you two pence for that writing book. Come and see the dancing puppets!’

It did sound interesting so Pinocchio said, ‘OK.

But the puppets stopped dancing when they saw Pinocchio.

‘Hey! Puppet boy!’they shouted. ‘Come and dance with us!’

Then everyone in the audience turned and looked at him. Then the nasty Puppet Master arrived.

‘Time for bed!But first I need some wood for the fire. I want to cook my dinner!’He grabbed on old puppet.

Then Pinocchio did something brave.

‘Let him go!’ he cried. ‘Put that puppet down!Take me!’Put me on your fire and let this old puppet go!’

The Puppet Master looked at Pinocchio’s eyes. Pinocchio’s eyes were not afraid. So hedropped the old wooden puppet onto the floor.

‘OK,’ he said. ‘No more dancing today. You can all go to bed.’

In the morning, the Puppet Master spoke to Pinocchio.

‘My father’s a poor old carpenter,’ said Pinocchio. ‘He sold his coat to buy me a writing book. But I sold that book to see your puppet show. I was bad, but I want to be good now.’

‘Here…take these coins. Give them to your father. Now go! Quick! Or I might keep you,’ said the Puppet Master.

Pinocchiohe grabbed the coins and ran.On the way, he met the Fox brothers, Tommy Fox and Danny Fox. He told them about the coins he had.

They said ‘Listen! There’s a magic field outside the town. Plant your

coins there and they will grow into money trees. Each one will have a thousand coins shining in the sunlight!’

And he took them to a restaurant. After dinner they said, they went to wash their hands, they never came back. So Pinocchio had to pay for the meal. So, only one coin left. Outside, it was dark. Pinocchio started to walk and then he saw the cricket again.

‘Pinocchio!’ said the cricket. It looked at him with bright eyes. ‘Coins

don’t grow into trees!’

‘I haven’t got any coins!,’ lied Pinocchio

And when he told this lie, his nose suddenly got longer. Just then two robbers grabbed Pinocchio. But Pinocchio hid the coin in his mouth. They grabbed him and help him upside down. Pinocchio kept his mouth shut. A kind lady came to help Pinocchio and took him to her home.

‘Hello, Pinocchio. I’m a friend and I saw it all!’ she said. ‘Those robbers

were trying to steal your money.’

‘It is under the tree,’lied Pinocchio.

Really it was in his hand. So many lies! Again his nose got longer. It was as long as the bed!

‘Listen,’ said the Kind Friend. ‘Stop telling lies!’

So then he showed her his coin, and at once his nose was perfectly alright again.

So Pinocchio thanked her and hurried back to town. But then…Oh no! He met the Fox brothers again! Pinocchio didn’t want to tell a lie so he showed them the coin.

‘Now!’ said Danny Fox. ‘Let’s plant it in the magic field. Then you need to water that coin! So go and fetch some water.’

Pinocchio fetched some water and came back. He waited and waited, but nothing happened. Then Pinocchio looked in the hole and saw that it was empty.

So he started to cry. Suddenly, a large white bird appeared. She wanted to help him. Pinocchio got on the bird’s back, and they flew away. They came to the sea and the wind was strong. Pinocchio saw Gepetto in a little boat. And then, suddenly, he fell into the water.

Pinocchio bravely he jumped into the sea. The waves were big and Pinocchio went up and down all day. But he couldn’t find his father. Some hours later, the water carried Pinocchio to an island. Pinocchio lay on the sand. He was tired, lonely and hungry – but he was alive. After a while he got up. He saw people working. Two men were making baskets.

‘Hello!’ said Pinocchio. ‘Can you give me some bread?’

‘You have to work for your food here. Help me carry the basket,’ they said.

Pinocchio didn’t want to carry the bucket. But he was very hungry. The bucket was very heavy. But Pinocchio carried it all the way to the old woman’s house. She was

thesame Kind Friend!’

‘I want to be a real boy! I don’t want to be a wooden puppet!’, he said.‘If you go to school and work hard,’ she said, ‘then you will become a real boy.’

So the next day Pinocchio went to school. He worked hard. He listened to the teacher. He didn’t talk in class. And he made friends with a boy called Candlewick. The Kind Friend was pleased with him. ‘Tomorrow evening you’ll be a real boy!’ she said.

But the next day he saw a very strange bus. It was pulled by eight grey donkeys.

The bus did look interesting, andit went to the Lazyland. Lazy land was a noisy place. There were children everywhere, playing and shouting and eating sweets. It was fun at first, but soon Pinocchio felt tired and wanted to go home. The next day Pinocchio felt strange. He had donkeys’ ears, tails and fur. Then the bus driver took them to a donkey market and sold them.

An angry man bought Pinocchio, but soon he didn’t want him anymore. He threw him into the sea. Pinocchio fell into the deep blue water. And slowly he changed back into a puppet. Then a huge whale opened its mouth and suddenly Pinocchio found himself inside. There he could breathe… and there inside the whale he saw… his father!

The whale opened its mouth, they swam out. Then a dolphin carried them back to land.

Now Gepetto was too old and tired to work, so Pinocchio took him home. Pinocchio went back to school.

Pinocchio worked hard. Every day he went to school and listened to his teacher, and at night he helped Gepetto. Together they cooked their evening meal and talked about Pinocchio’s day at school. The Kind Friend was getting old too, so Pinocchio took food to her and helped her carry buckets of water.

Sometime later, Pinocchio had a dream. The Kind Friend spoke to him.

‘Pinocchio!’ she said. ‘You are brave! And now you are also kind. You work hard and you are good. Because of this you are changing. You heart is now a real heart. One day you will be a real man. Pinocchio! You are not a puppet anymore! You are a real boy!’And when Pinocchio woke up … he saw that it was true!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Part 1

Once upon a time, on a cold winter’s day, a queen sat by the window of her castle. She sat and made clothes for her baby. She wanted to have a little girl.

Suddenly, she pricked her finger with her needle, and three drops of her red blood fell from it.Then she looked at the dark black wood of the trees outside and at the white snow.‘My little girl will be very beautiful. She will have skin as white as snow, hair as black as those trees and cheeks as red as blood’, thought the Queen.

Soon the Queen had her baby, a little daughter. And the little girl had skin as white as snow, hair as black as trees in winter and cheeks as red as blood.

‘Oh, dear little child, you are very beautiful! I will call you Snow White,’said the Queen,

She loved the little girl very much. But when Snow White was only two years old, a very sad thing happened. The Queen was very ill and she died.

After a few years, Snow White’s father, the King, married again. His new queen was beautiful, but she was also nasty and unkind. She thought that she was the most beautiful woman in the country.

The new queen looked at Snow White. She saw the little girl was very beautiful, and she was jealous. She saw the light in Snow White’s eyes and she wanted to kill her.

The new queen had a magic mirror. Every day she stood in front of it and asked:

‘Mirror, mirror, on the wall, Who is the most beautiful of all?’

The mirror always answered: ‘You are, Queen.’

But one day, when she asked this question, the mirror answered:

‘Of all them who stand tall, you, Queen, are the most beautiful of all.

But listen now, for this is true:Snow White is more beautiful than you.’

The Queen was very angry‘She must die. I never want to see her face again.’

She gave some money to a huntsman and told him to kill her.

The huntsman did not want to do it, but he was afraid. So he took Snow White and together they walked into the forest. He put his hand on his knife three times. But each time Snow White turned and looked at him, and he could not kill her.

At last, the huntsman killed a deer and took its heart.

‘I will take this deer’s heart back to the Queen and I will tell her that Snow White is dead,’he thought.

Part 2

Snow White was alone and lost. She ran through the forest. She ran all day. Now it was late and she was afraid. The forest was full of strange noises. She knew that there were wild animals there, but they did not come near her.

At last, Snow White came out of the forest. She saw a mountain, and at the foot of the mountain she saw a little house. It was almost dark now, so she opened the door.

Inside, the furniture was very small, and there were seven of everything: seven little chairs and seven little beds. There were seven little cups on the table, and seven plates of food. Snow White was very hungry, but she didn’t want to take some-one’s dinner. So she ate a little from each plate, and she drank a little from each cup. Then she went upstairs and fell asleep on three of little beds.

The house belonged to seven dwarfs. Every day the dwarfs went to the mountain and looked for gold. That night they finished their work and came home.

‘Someone has eaten from our plates and drunk from our cups,’ said one.

Then the youngest dwarf called from upstairs‘Come quickly, everybody. Come and see. There is a young girl asleep on our beds. She is very beautiful.’

All the other dwarfs ran upstairs. ‘Yes, she is very beautiful!Shhhh! Don’t wake her’, they said.

So that night they all slept downstairs by the fire. In the morning, Snow White told them her story.

‘Stay here with us,’ said the dwarfs.

So Snow White stayed and lived with the seven dwarfs. She cooked and cleaned and washed for them, and they were kind to her.

Every morning the dwarfs went to the mountain to look for gold.

Be careful, Snow White,’ they said when they left. ‘The Queen is a dangerous woman. She must not know that you are here. Don’t leave the house anddo not open the door to any said Snow White.’

‘The Queen will never find me. She thinks that I am dead,’ – said the theSnow White.

When the Queen spoke to hermirror it told the Snow White was alive. So the Queen dressed as an old woman, took the ribbons and walked quickly through the forest and came to the little house where the Snow White lived.

Part 3

Snow White looked at the ribbons and opened the door. The old woman helped the Snow White tie the ribbons. But she tied them very tightly and the Snow White could not breathe. She fell on the floor. When the dwarfs came back home at night they saw the ribbons and quickly untied them. ‘That was not an old woman. That was the Queen’, they said.

At home, the Queen asked the mirror about the White Snow. The mirror told her she was alive and as beautiful as before.

The Old Queen dressed as an old woman again, took poisoned combs, and went the little house in the forest. There she opened her basket and showed poisoned combs to the White Snow. Then she stuck the poisoned comb into Snow White’s head. Poor Snow White fell on the floor.

When the dwarfs came back home at night they saw the comb and quickly pulled it from the hair. ‘That was not an old woman again. That was the Queen’, they said.

At home, the Queen asked the mirror about the White Snow. The mirror told her she was alive and as beautiful as before.

So, the Queen dressed as a farmer’s wife and went to the dwarfs’ cottage. But Snow White did not want to open the door. The old woman showed her the poised apple. She cut the apple in two, ate the green part of the apple herself and gave the red part of the apple to Snow White. Snow White began to eat, but when the first piece of the poised apple was in her mouth, she fell to the floor. ‘Ha! Goodbye forever, Snow White,’ laughed the old woman.

At home, the Queen asked the mirror about the White Snow. The mirror told her the Queen was the most beautiful of all.

That night the dwarfs returned and found Snow White on the floor. They tried to wake her but she did not move or open her eyes.

‘This time she is dead. She has gone from us forever’, they said.

They made her a glass box, put Snow White in it and carried her up in the mountain. One dwarf always sat with her, day and night. Time went by, but Snow White’s skin was as still white as snow. Her cheeks were still as red as blood and her hair was still as black as trees in winter.

One day, a prince came by with some friends. When he saw White Snow, he fell in love with her at once. He wanted to take White Snow with him. To help him the dwarfs began to carry the glass box down the mountain. But the tripped near a tree and the box fell. At that moment, the piece of apple fell out of Snow White’s mouth. She opened her eyes and saw the Prince. She fell in love with him at once. He wanted her to be his wife. She said ‘yes’ to him.

So Snow White said Good bye to her friends the dwarfs and went away with the Prince.

In December they were married and there was a big party. Lots of important people came, and one of these important people was the jealous Queen. When she saw White Snow and the Prince she was very angry and jealous. She ran out of the castle and no one saw her again.

Snow White loved the Prince, and he loved her. In time, they had seven children, and they lived happily ever after.

Two Kites

THIS is Joe. He’s ten. And this is his sister, Millie. She’s younger than Joe. She is seven. Joe and Millie live with their mum and dad. They’ve got a big housewith a pretty garden. They’re from the UK. They live near the sea.

Joe and Millie like reading comics. They like painting and playing basketball.

Joe and Millie have got the same things. They share their toys. They share their sweets. They play together in the garden when it’s sunny. They play computer games in the house when it’s raining.

Joe and Millie go to the same school, but Joe is in Class 4 and Millie is in Class 2. They always play together after school. Sometimes they ride bikes to the park. Sometimes they play basketball in the garden.

It’s the summer holidays. Uncle Henry is visiting. He’s Dad’s younger brother and he lives in the USA. Joe and Millie love their uncle. He’s very kind and he always bring presents from the USA. Sometimes he brings sweets, and sometimes he brings toys.

Look! What have they got? Two kites!Joe and Millie are flying their kites. Millie’s kite is higher than Joe’s. Joe and Millie are happy.

‘Thank you, Uncle Henry! We love our kites!’ says Millie.

‘Look! My kite is flying very fast! Thank you, Uncle Henry!’

says Joe.

There’s no school in the summer holidays. Joe and Millie can play every day. They can play in the garden or they can go to the park. What are they doing today? It’s windy. Joe and Millie are flying their kites in the park.

Joe and Millie are laughing and running. They are having lots of fun.

‘I love my kite,’ says Millie.

‘Me too!’ says Joe. ‘This kite is the best present!’

Today is Friday. Joe and Mum are in town. They are doing the shopping at the supermarket. Mum needs to buy food. Then they are going to go to a sports shop because Joe wants to buy some new football boots. Millie isn’t in town. She’s in the garden flying her kite. There’s a tall tree in the garden. Millie doesn’t see the tree because she is looking at the kite.

Look out, Millie! Oh no! The kite is in the tree. The tree is very tall and the kite is very high. Millie can’t get it. She can’t climb the tree. She is pulling the string. Millie pulls and pulls. At last, the kite is free! Millie is happy. But then she looks at her kite … The kite is broken! Now Millie isn’t happy! She can’t play with her kite anymore, because it can’t fly. But what can Millie see? Millie can see Joe’s kite in his bedroom. It’s on his cupboard door.

Joe’s kite isn’t broken. And Joe’s kite is the same as Millie’s kite … Millie looks at her kite. Then she looks at Joe’s kite. Joe is in town with Mum.

‘Joe isn’t here,’ thinks Millie. ‘He’s in town. He doesn’t know that my kite is broken. His kite is red and white and my kite is the same.’

She puts her broken kite in Joe’s bedroom. She puts it on the cupboard door. Millie takes Joe’s kite. Then she goes to her bedroom and puts Joe’s kite in her toy box.

Just then, she hears the door downstairs. Joe and Mum are home.

It’s seven o’clock in the evening. It’s dinner time. The family is eating dinner together. They are eating spaghetti. Joe and Millie love pasta, but Millie doesn’t feel hungry.

Mum and Dad are talking. Dad has an idea. He wants to go to the beach on Saturday. Dad loves the sea. Mum is happy. She likes swimming. She wants to go to the beach, too.

‘Let’s take our lunch,’ says Mum. ‘We can stay at the beach all day!’

Dad is happy. He wants to have a picnic at the beach.

Joe is excited. He wants to fly his kite at the beach.

Millie isn’t happy. She feels worried. She doesn’t say anything.

It’s Saturday afternoon. The family is at the beach. It’s sunny and hot. Their picnic was nice. They had sandwiches, fruit and cake. Joe and Dad are having fun! They’re playing volleyball. Mum is reading a book.

Millie isn’t plying or reading. She is flying her kite. It’s windy at the beach and the kite is flying fast and high! Millie is happy again. She loves the kite. Suddenly she feels cheerful and relaxed. She isn’t thinking about the broken kite any more.

There are three children on the beach. They are watching Millie. They are laughing! They love Millie’s kite, too. Millie and the children play on the beach together. Mum is watching Millie and the children.

Joe and Dad stop playing volleyball. Dad is thirsty and he wants a drink. Joe is watching the children now. They are playing with Millie and the kite. They are laughing and having fun.

‘Dad, can I get my kite from the car, please?’ says Joe.

‘Yes, you can,’ says Dad.

Joe is running. He is going to the car.

‘Hey, Millie!’ Joe shouts. ‘I’m going to give it to the children!’

‘Oh, Joe. You’re very kind,’ says Millie.

Millie is miserable. She is sorry for taking Joe’s kite. She wants to tell him, but she’s scared. She doesn’t want Joe to be angry.

Joe goes to the car. He wants to get his kite. Joe wants the children to be happy. He wants to share his kite with them.

He’s looking in the car. He finds the kite under some toys. He doesn’t see that it is broken. Joe takes his kite to the children. He is smiling.

And everyone is smiling. The children want to fly their new kite. They run and shout. They are laughing and chasing the kite. But something is wrong. The kite isn’t flying. It’s falling. The kite falls on the beach. The girl picks it up. All the children look at the kite.

‘It’s broken,’ says the girl. ‘Look!’

The children are sad and Joe is sad too.

‘You can have my kite,’ says Millie. ‘We have got lots of toys.’

‘Thank you!’ say the children.

Millie feels sorry. She knows she is not as kind as Joe.

‘It was Joe’s idea,’ Millie says.

‘Let’s all play together! Says Joe.

Now all the children are happy. They are running and shouting. They love the kite. The kite is flying high and fast and the children are chasing it. Joe is happy. He can see that the children love their new kite. Millie feels cheerful, too. She is happy because she did something good.

Now it’s time to go home. Joe and Millie must stop playing with the children. They go back to Mum and Dad. Mum is packing up the picnic. Dad is putting away the umbrella.

Mum is looking at the children.

‘Those children have got your kite,’ she says.

‘Did you give your kite to the children?’ asks Dad.

‘Yes, Dad,’ says Joe. ‘We wanted to give them our kite.’

He feels worried. He didn’t ask Mum and Dad first. Millie doesn’t want Joe to be in trouble.

‘We’ve got lots of toys,’ she says. ‘Those children haven’t got lots of toys to play with.’

‘Yes, it was kind. You are good children,’ says Dad. ‘We’ve proud of you.’

Joe is happy. But Millie feels sad. She is thinking about the broken kite.

‘It was Joe’s idea,’ she says. ‘He wanted to share with the children.’

‘Well done, Joe. That was a good idea,’ says Mum.

‘Millie shared, too,’ says Joe. He is smiling at Millie.

Everyone is smiling and Millie suddenly feels very happy. She isn’t worried any more.

In the evening, Mum is cooking dinner. Dad is helping in the kitchen. Joe and Millie are helping, too. They are setting the table.

Millie is thinking. She is thinking about Uncle Henry. He is generous. She thinks about Joe and his idea. He is kind and good.

‘I must be kind and generous, too,’ she thinks.

‘I’m not going to be naughty again. I’m not going to have secrets.

I’m going to be good.’
