Problems and methodology of historic preservation in Kazan

Resume

Historic preservation is an eternal problem of old cities. Kazan is an ancient and unique city with significant historic and cultural potential. During the soviet times when the city developed via construction of suburbs the historic center stayed intact. In the new economic situation the demand for the reconstruction of the city center appeared. Historic monuments and quarters, in particular Old-Tatar settlement («sloboda») are being demolished step-by-step. In this situation current heritage-related initiatives of the regional Government, mayor of Kazan and investors are well-timed and need professional support from architects, urban planners and preservationists. Variety of approaches to location, style, scale and number of storeys of new buildings is needed. Unique contemporary buildings impressive in architecture and structure are also eligible in historic center. Only innovative architecture is valuable for the future. Therewith an ultimate preservation of natural and architectural landscape, layout and local cultural originality of Kazan is essential.
