A EUROPEAN COUNTRY— UKRAINE

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered with Russia on the east; Belarus on the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary on the west; Romania and Moldova on the southwest; and the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov on the south. The city of Kyiv (Kyiv) is both the capital and the largest city of Ukraine. Ukraine is a unitary state composed of 24 oblasts(provinces), one autonomous republic (Crimea), and two cities with special status: Kyiv, its capital, and Sevastopol, which houses the Russian Black Sea Fleet under a leasing agreement. Ukraine is a republic under a semi-presidential system with separate legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

Since the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine continues to maintain the second largest military in Europe, after that of Russia. The Ukrainian language is the only official language in Ukraine, while Russian is also widely spoken. The dominant religion in the country is Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which has heavily influenced Ukrainian architecture, literature and music. At 603,700 square kilometres (233,100 sq mi) and with a coastline of 2,782 square kilometres (1,074 sq mi), Ukraine is the world's 44th — largest country (after the Central African Republic, before Madagascar). It is the second largest country in Europe (after the European part of Russia, before metropolitan France).

The Ukrainian landscape consists mostly of fertile plains (or steppes) and plateaus, crossed by rivers such as the Dnipro, Seversky Dinets, Dniester and the Southern Buh as they flow south into the Black Sea and the smaller Sea of Azov. To the southwest, the delta of the Danube forms the border with Romania.

The country's only mountains are the Carpathian Mountains in the west, of which the highest is the Hora Hoverla at 2,061 metres (6,760 ft), and those on the Crimean peninsula, in the extreme south along the coast. Ukraine has a mostly temperate continental climate, although a more Mediterranean climate is found on the southern Crimean coast. Precipitation is disproportionately distributed; it is highest in the west and north and lowest in the east and southeast. Western Ukraine, receives around 1,200 millimetres (47 in) of precipitation annually, while Crimea receives around 400 millimetres (16 in). Winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland. Average annual temperatures range from 5.5—7°C (42—45°F) in the north, to 11—13°C (52—55.4°F) in the south.

THE POPULATION OF UKRAINE AND GREAT BRITAIN

In terms of population (on 5.12.2005 — 48.5 million people) Ukraine ranks 5th in Europe (after Germany, Italy, UK and France) and 21st in the world. It's share makes 7 % of the European population and less than 1 % of the world population. The general census in 2001 established that 32.6 million people live in cities and towns (67.2 %) and 15.9 million (32.8 %) — in villages. There are five cities in Ukraine that have populations of over million: Kyiv (2 million and 611 thousand), Kharkiv (1 million and 470 thousand), Dnipropetrovsk (1 million and 65 thousand), Donetsk (1 million and 16 thousand) and Odesa (1 million and 29 thousand).

Average density of population in Ukraine is 80 people per square kilometer, which is less than in many other European countries. The density and quantity of Ukrainian population was influenced in the past by the war with foreign occupants. Ukraine is suffering from a demographic crisis. Its population reached its maximum at the beginning of 1993 — 52 million 244 thousand people. The maximum decrease happened in 2001 — by 521.7 thousand people but recently an opposite process seems to be taking place. In 2003 the population decreased by 381 thousand people. This is due to a slight increase in the birth rate (even though the death rate is still higher) and a decrease in emigration.

Life expectancy is one of the generalizing determinants of the living standards and it is influenced by various factors — the quality of medical services, material wealth, and way of life and genes. It varies between women and men, as women are physically predisposed to live longer and generally have less bad habits. Between 1990 and 2002 life expectancy of women fell from 74.9 years to 74.1, of men — from 65.6 years to 62.7. As a consequence the difference in average life expectancy of men and women increased from 9.3 to 11.4 years. Ukrainians are one of the largest nations in Europe and the second largest Slavic nation.

The population of Great Britain is about 58,093,000. The overall population density is 238 persons per sq km (616 per sq mi). A small percentage of Britons live in rural areas; 89 % are urban dwellers. The largest cities in Great Britain are London (population of 6,803,100), Birmingham (934,900), Leeds (674,400), and Glasgow (654,542). Most Britons (94 %) are either English, Scottish, Irish, or Welsh.

The country's official language is English. Numerically, the Church of England (or Anglican Church) has the largest number of adherents of any religion in Great Britain, accounting for 48 % of the population; most members reside in England. The second largest religion, statistically, is Roman Catholicism (16 %); Catholics reside throughout the kingdom. Other religions include Protestantism (which includes the state religions of both Wales and Scotland), Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Sikhism.
