This story is about a girl and her grandad. This girl discovered her grandad because she couldn’t cope with algebra. Grandad helped her and she stopped being afraid of maths signs and symbols.

How did the girl’s Grandad help the author understand the subject?
Grandad taught her that maths signs and symbols were not just marks on paper. They were not flat. There were threedimensional, and you could approach them from different directions. You could take them apart and put them together in a variety of shapes, like Lego. She stopped being afraid of them.
What else did the author understand about her Grandad?
The author learnt that her Grandad’s world was full of miracles and mazes, mirrors and misleading signs. He was fascinated by riddles and codes and labyrinths, by the origin of place names, by grammar, by slang, by jokes — although he never laughed at them — by anything that might mean something else. She discovered her Grandad.

He said that nobody didn’t know about it but many people believe that whales sometimes throw themselves on the beach. They sort of go crazy. Dirty water makes them that crazy.

Some people brought ropes they began to pull him into the water. It was hard as he was very heavy.
How did this event affect the story-teller’s life?
The memory of this event stayed in the author’s heart forever. That’s why he decided to study the ocean and protect animals. Now he is a member of Greenpeace and protects whales both from hunting and the many other daily threats they face.

What do you want to do in the future?
Making a satisfying career choice is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life. It’s very difficult to choose your future career and find a job that you are happy in, because there are many alternatives and you don’t know where to start.
There are many reasons for choosing a career: professional respect, the desire to serve the society, gaining some kind of social status and earning money. Before choosing a career we should make sure that it’s in demand and there is a wide range of available job opportunities to secure our future. We can’t ignore the money factor as money can help our dreams come true.

Nowadays there’s diversity in career choices. In my opinion, the final career choice should depend on our interests and abilities. For me an ideal job is the job that encourages me to do my best, gives me opportunities to learn, progress and challenge myself. I would like to have friendly colleagues, a supportive boss and opportunities for career advancement. I want to enjoy my work and get satisfaction from it.
I made my choice last year. I want to enter The Belarusian State University. I am going to be a lawyer. Lawyers don’t only punish people for different crimes but try to prevent them. They help people to find the right road in life. The lawyers protect the rights and interests of citizens and organizations.
I’d like to be a journalist. They tell people the truth and provide them with news and true information. A journalist must be interested in many subjects and must be a well-educated person. They try to solve different problems with the help of mass media.
I have decided to become an economist for many reasons. Firstly because of the economic situation in our country good experts are always required at all enterprises. Secondly, at school I liked lessons of mathematics and the English language most of all, what, in my opinion, it is necessary for my future speciality. I hope I’ll be able to get profound knowledge and practical skills when I become a university student. My true desire is to contribute to the process of bringing Belarus to market economy and turning it into a country with a high living standard.
I want to become a computer programmer. I am interested in computers. It is a whole new world. My favourite subjects in school are mathematics, physics, and, of course, computer science. My hobby is computer games and computer programming. I have a computer at home and can spend hours working at it. It is much easier to do things on computer, for example to write a composition. You can change the text as many times as you want and you don't need to rewrite everything if you changed something.

I think that the profession of programmer can give many opportunities. Computers are the most rapidly changing sphere of modern technology. We are living in the age of information. And I think that the future is just filled with computers. So after I finish school I want to enter the university and study computer science.
I want to work in an advertising company. Advertising products and services is very important for modern society nowadays. It helps people to make the right choice and to save money at the same time.
I want to be an engineer. They say that it’s a difficult profession and it requires good knowledge of physics and mathematics. I’m ready to give it a try. My teachers also say that I’m rather good at this field. I have analytical skills, logical thinking and I’m attentive to details. The school subjects that I’m good at are algebra and geometry. My father says that engineers need excellent technical knowledge, so he helps me with that. Moreover, strong computer skills are required, as most of the equipment today is computerized. If I become a mechanical engineer, I will definitely have to deal with machinery and software programs for problem solving. If I manage to enter the Technological University, I will have to study for 5 years to become a professional engineer. In my opinion, engineering is a great profession. It gives lots of opportunities for development and self-growth. There are so many interesting fields that I can choose from, such as civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering etc.
What concerns the field I’d like to work in, I’m interested in the field of medicine. The field of medicine is considered a very prestigious career path. A person can work as a physician, nurse, doctor, surgeon, fitness trainer, nutritionist, etc. Jobs of medical scientists are also demand in pharmaceutical and biotech industries as well as in the fields of food processing. Nurses are always in demand as they help to improve the quality of a patient’s life, making healthcare accessible for children, the elderly and people with disabilities. Experts say that doctors, surgeons and nurses will be the top jobs in the future.

I have a dream to be a doctor. This is an interesting and noble profession. I want to help people who face health problems. Doctors should be kind and attentive to people. It’s one of the most demanded professions in the world.
I will become the police officer. It seems to me, it is a very important profession. After all it is necessary to keep order on streets and in public places, to protect people from rude fellows. When the person gets to trouble when something threatens his life, he comes for the help to police officers. If the child is gone, the police can help. If robbed – too. Almost police officers can help with any trouble. And it is very important that to this profession there would be honest and responsible people who will fall in love with this work. I consider that I will be able not to dishonor official authority. Thanks to my profession life in the country can become better and easier. And I am glad that I will be able to take in it part.
I’d like to be a teacher. Teaching can be called the greatest of the arts. It’s a great responsibility to bring up children. Teachers should be well-educated and well-informed. They help their pupils to understand the world we live in.
Luckily my main interest is not money but the belief that my profession is very important for our society. This noble profession demands constant creativity and erudition. I think I will do my best to be tactful, self-confident and objectively-minded. Of course, to become a good specialist I should be devoted to my profession. I should be persistent and hard-working.
In conclusion I should say that working is the best way through which people can be helpful and they can enjoy life.

1) Some people like to work independently, while others would prefer to work in a team. It depends on personal traits and working environment. There are many advantages of working in a team as teamwork challenges our abilities, makes work more efficient, gives valuable experience, develops the skills of communication and cooperation. Among the disadvantages of working for others is that we have no chance to decide our own schedule and can have a lower level of enthusiasm and self-esteem.

I’m at my best when I work independently and then collaborate with a team, and I get the sense that you have a collaborative culture here. I really loved the dynamic where I’d work hard on my own project and then come together with the rest of the group to share what I had learned.
