Glory of Krisna and Yaduvamsa

Suta said, “Thereafter, Hrslkesa-lord Purusottama, performed a severe penance for begetting a son, though he, himself was the lord of tapas.

He is the creator of the entire universe, he had incarnated on earth of his own free-will. Inspite of that, he indicating that Parames'vara was his own root, performed penance for him in the world.

He went to the hermitage of the noble-souled sage Upamanyu for the purpose, which had a large number of birds chirping in the same, and was served by a large number of yogis.

At that point of time he was riding over the resplendant bird king Garuda and carried a conch, cakra and iron club in his hands. The Srlvatsa mark was at his chest.

The hennitage had a large number of trees and the creepers besides a number of varieties of flowers. It had several hermitages of the sages, besides the sound of the reciting of the Vedic hymns, was emerging there.

I was infested with bears, Sarabhas (the fabulous animal having eight feet), lions, elephants, which kept on wandering in the hermitage. It also had lakes containing pure and sweet water.

There were several orchards and auspicious temples for deities in the hermitage. There were Rishis, the sons of Rishis, the great ascetics in groups, the performers of Agnihotras (fire- worship) engaged in the study of the Vedas, besides the Yogins engaged in meditation concentrating their gaze on the tips of the noses.

It was auspicious from all the sides, and it was being served well by the wise seers having excellence in tattvas, the rivers, which surrounded it from all the sides as well as the ascetics muttering the mantras.

The hermitage was saved by the ascetics, engaged in the auspicious tapas for lord Shiva, who had been quite calm by nature, always had truthful resolve, free from agonies, and undisturbed by troubles.

The inmates of the asrama had applied ashes over the body, reciting the mantra of Rudra. Some of them had their heads clean shaven, while others had the matted locks of hair over the heads. The place was resorted to always by wise ascetics and expounders of the Brahman. The ds'rama was the best and quite charming and appeared more graceful because of the hermitages of the Siddha Yogins.

The auspicious Gariga which removed the sins of the people always flowed there. Reaching there, Krisna, the soul of the universe, had an audience with the ascetics, who were devoid of all the sins. Madhava-Krisna honoured them speaking sweet words and also adored them. All the ascetics on their part, having an audience with Krisna, the holder of conch, discus and an iron club, besides being the preceptor of the yogis, offered their salutation to him. Thereafter, they began to eulogise him with the Mantras of Vedic origin, after retaining the eternal deity in the heart.

At the sight of the invisible Mahamuni Krisna, all of them conversed among themselves, “He is lord Narayana himself who is beyond the supreme being and is the cosmic witness of all.

The lord Krisna, inspite of his being Pradhaha Purusa has himself arrived here. He is beyond decay, the creator, the destroyer as well as the protector of all.

He himself is formless, but has arrived here in human form, to meet the sages. He is the creator and the dispenser of destiny. He is omnipresent and is arriving here.

He is eternal, beyond decay, beyond measure, limitless, MahabhUta (the great spirit) as well as the Mahes'vara.” Hari, Govinda, who is beyond the scope of words, heard and understood their words.

Then, Govinda hurriedly reached the hermitage of Upamanyu. Madhava, belonging to the Yaduvamsa, visiting each and every tlrtha touched the water of that place.

Krisna, the son of DevakI, performed the holy rite of tarpana for the Gods, Sages and Pitrs. He also adored the Shivalingas of unmeasured brilliance, consecrated by the sages over the banks of the river.

Wherever lord Janardana went, the people of those places welcomed the lord offering him the flowers and the unbroken rice-grains. At the very sight of lord Vasudeva, the holder of the Sarnga bow, a conch and a sword, the people stood there motionless. All of them felt totally devoted to lord Krisna, with auspicious limbs.

Such of the sages who were desirous of getting involved in yogic exercises, they at the sight of lord Janardana, were atonce engaged in meditation and they did not move out their limbs. Thereafter, Vasudeva, entered the holy Ganga and taking his bath, he performed oblation for the Gods, Pitrs and the Rishis. Then, carrying the best flowers in his hands, he entered the hermitage of the sage Upamanyu.

Reaching there, he had a look at the great sage, the best of the Yogins, having body besmeared with the holy ashes, wearing the matted locks of hair as well as the bark garments, and who looked peaceful. He offered his salutation to the sage lowering his head. The learned sage also finding the arrival of lord Krisna, adored him.

He offered Krisna, the preceptor of the yogis, and the prominent guest, a seat and speaking like a pupil he addressed lord Visnu, saying. “I am quite well aware about you. О Hrslkesa, you are welcome here. Our penance has met with success today.

Because lord Visnu has himself reached my place and You are the soul of the universe, we are glad. The people fail to have an audience with you making all the efforts. What is the

cause of an adorable person to arrive here?” Listening to the words of Upamanvu the great sage, the great yogi and son of DevakI, offered his salutation to the sage and said.

Krisna said, “O Lord, I would like to have an audience with Krttivasa lord Shiva (wearing elephant-hide). Getting anxious to meet lord Shiva, I have arrived at your hermitage. You tell me, how could I have a meeting with lord Shiva, who is the best among those well-versed in the yogic exercises?

I would like to meet the lord of Uma, without delay.” When so asked by Krisna, lord Upamanyu replied, “One can meet lord Shiva by devotion or by performing severe penance. Concentrating your mind, you perform penance here itself.

The best of the sages, well-versed in Brahman, meditate for Ishvara, the god of gods, here. The yogis and ascetics also adore him here.

The bull-bannered lord Shiva accompanied with his consort, the goblins and the Yogins enjoy their sports here. This is the place, where the blessed sage Vasistha, performing severe tapas, achieved Rudra and achieved the Yogic power from Mahesvara. Blessed Krisna Dvaipayana as well, had an audience with lord Shiva here and he achieved the divine knowledge. In this charming asrama, adoring lord Shiva, the sages endowed with devotion, performed penance and secured sons from Rudra having matted hair. The gods with their mind filled with devotion offer prayer to the goddess BhavanI, Mahadev! as well as Mahadeva and fearlessly achieve ecstatic pleasure.

It is here, that Savarni, the best of the ascetics, adoring Mahadeva, had achieved the best of yoga, besides the proficiency in the composing of the splendid Sariihita of Puranas for the good people. The same Savarni, again, had modified the Puranic Samhitas for the good and welfare of the people. It was here that Kama saw Mahadeva and composed the Sariihita of Sasipayins based on Puranas at his behest. It contained twelve thousand verses. The Purana named Vayavlyottara, acceptable to the Vedas, a Sariihita containing sixteen thousand verses was enunciated here. This Vayavlyottara Purana is recognised by the Vedas. The best of the Brahmana disciples, mercifully, popularized this Samhita, which was composed by Vaisampayana.

This is the same place where the sage Yajnavalkya perfomring the severe tapas, had an audience with Shiva and by his grace composed the excellent Yogas'astra.

In earlier times, the sage Bhrgu, performing hard tapas, had achieved a son named Sukra who was well versed in the Yoga, by the grace of Shiva.

Therefore, О Lord of gods, you also perform the severe tapas here and should have an audience with lord Shiva, the wearer of the matted locks of hair who is known as the lord of the universe.”

Thus the sage Upamanyu granted the perfect knowledge, the holy rite pertaining to Pas'upata doctrine and its Yogic practice to Krisna of indefatigable activity.

Similarly at the advice of the sage, lord Madhusudana Krisna, started performing tapas for lord Shiva.

Vasudeva then applied ashes all over his body, getting his head shaved, clad in the bark garments, devoting his mind in Shiva, continued to perform the Japa of Rudra.

After the lapse of a considerable time, lord Shiva accompanied by Uma, and adorned with the crescent moon, was spotted by Krisna in the sky.

He was adorned with the kirlta crown, carrying a club, wearing a wonderful garland of variegated colours and was holding Pinaka bow, as well as the trident. Such a Mahadeva, accompanied with Parvati, the great goddess, was spotted by Krisna. He was clad in the tiger skin.

Vasudeva found before him the ancient purusa, the lord of the vital airs, eternal, the great Yogi, Is'vara, smaller than the smallest, and extremely powerful Shiva.

He held a battle axe in his hand, and had three eyes. His body was plastered with the ashes and he wore the tiger skin. He was uttering Pranava OM from his mouth. He possessed the lustre of a thousand suns. Lord Shiva appeared in this form.

His gloiy is beyond the description of the gods, Brahma, Indra, Agni, Varuna and even Mrtyu (the god of Death). Such a type of Rudra was found by Krisna before him.

He found on the left of Girisa his self, the unmanifest form of infinite, who was praising the lord variously with various words and who was holding conch, sword and discus in the form of Adi-purusa.

He found lord Brahma, the grandsire of the universe, mounted over the swan, being the preceptor of the world, standing to the right side, who stood in the sky in human form and was adoring Shiva with folded hands.

The immensely glorious Nandlsvara having the lustre of thousands of suns, besides Ganesa, the lord of the three worlds and Kumara, as refulgent as the fire, were also spotted by him.

The sages like Marichi, Atri, Pulaha, Pulaslya, Pracetas, Daksa, Kanva, Paras'ara, Vasistha and Svayambhuva Manu were also seen by him.

Then contemplating over the universal Atman within his self, the large-hearted and wise Visnu, offered his salutation to the Goddess and Girisa with folded hands. Thus thinking, he pleased the lord with prayers.

Krisna said, “О Eternal lord, О Sarvayoga (possessor of all Yogas), salutation to you. Brahma and other Rishis regard you as ‘AIT, i.e., embodiment of everything like sattva, rajas and tamas.

You yourself are Brahma, Hari, Rudra, Vis'vakarma, and the destroyer. You also dwell in the solar disc. You are Prana (vital breath), Agni and Indra, besides other forms. I take refuge with the same Isa.

Those believing in the Sarhkhya philosophy, visualise you as nirguna (devoid of gunas). Those believing in Yoga system, say that you are Ekarupa and always adore you in their hearts. The Vedas also describe you in the form of Rudra, the praiseworthy deity; I offer my salutation to you and take refuge in you.

By offering a single flower or tree leaf at your foot, a person is freed from the worldly bondage. By your grace, with the mere remembering of your lotus-like feet served by Siddhas and Yogins, a person is freed from all the sins.

Your place is spotless, without any division, is lodged in the heart, the one who is without the beginning, middle or the end. You are treated to be the origin of all. You are endless, immobile, truthful, and omnipresent; the entire world has emerged out of you. I therefore take refuge in lord Shiva who is Visvesvara.

О Nllakantha (blue-throated), О trident bearer, О three-eyed and the form of Ekanta, salutation to you. I bow in reverence to Isana and Mahadeva.

Salutation to the holder of the bow Pinaka. Salutation to the form of munda (staff-bearer of tonsured head) and the carrier of a trident. Salutation to the holder of thunderbolt in his hand, without robes, and having the locks of hair over the head.

You are the creator of the Bhairva sound, the form of Kala, wearing the serpent as the sacred thread, and the form of fire, salutation to you.

Salutation to the lord of the mountains. Salutation to you, О Svahakara (the consecrator by the utterance of Svaha), Salutation to you having the gigantic form and the one who indulges in the loud laughter.

You are the destroyer of Kamadeva and the subjugator of Kala, salutation to you. Salutation to Нага of terrible apparel, to Нага, the archer.

You are having three eyes and are clad in tiger skin, salutation to you. You are the lord of the goddess Ambika, as well as the animals. Salutation to you.

You have the form of sky, also the lord of the sky, salutation to you. You have the body of a man and a woman and are the propounder of Sarhkhya and Yoga systems of philosophy. Salutation to you.

You are the lord of Bhairavas, whose Linga is adored by the gods. You are the preceptor of Kumara Karttikeya, salutation to you. Salutation to the god of gods.

You are the lord of the yajnas and Brahmacarin, salutation to you. You are great hunter of deer, and lord of Brahma, salutation to you.

You are Hamsa (the Swan), to the universe, salutation to you again and again. You are a Yogin who can be known by the yogic practices. You possess Yogamaya and as such salutation to you.

You are protector of life, you like the sound of the bells, bearer of the skull, besides being the lord of luminaries. Salutation to you.

Salutation to you again and again. Salutation to you again and again. О Parames'vara, You better fulfil my wishes in a universal form.”

Suta said, “Lord Madhava, thus offered prayer to the lord with utmost devotion and О Brahmanas, he fell at the feet of the lord and the goddess prostrate like a staff.

Then lord Shiva, having the majestic voice like the rumbling sound of clouds, lifted up Krisna, the killer of Kes'in, and spoke sweet words to him.

Shiva said, “O Lotus-eyed one, what for are you performing the hard tapasl You yourself are the bestower of the reward of all the deeds and holy rites in this world.

You yourself are my Narayana form. О Purusottama, without you, there could be no existence for the universe.

О Narayana, you know the infinite Atman, the Supreme Lord, Mahadeva, the master of great Yoga, by means of your own Yoga, О Kesava.”

Lord Krisna, listening to the words of lord Mahadeva, smilingly looking at the bull- bannered Shiva as well as Parvati-the great goddess, said to them.

He said, “O Sankara, you have understood everything by means of your Yoga. I am desirous of a devoted son like myself. You kindly bestow the same to me.”

Thereafter Shiva, the universal soul, with a delightful heart, said, “Be it so.” Then, looking at the goddess Girija, he embraced lord Krisna.

Then Girija, the mother of the worlds, the sharer of half the body of Shiva and the daughter of Himagiri, spoke to Krisna.

She said, “O Limitless one, О Infallible one, I am well aware of your utmost devotion towards Shiva as well as myself.

I am also aware of the fact that you are none else then Narayana yourself, besides being the universal soul and Purusottama. You were bom as the son of DevakI, as you had been entreated to do so by gods formerly.

See Atman through your own Atman now. There is no difference between us. Sages consider both of us as identical.

Still, О Kesava, you should accept my desired boons. You receive from me the universal knowledge, fortunes, knowledge relating to Parames'vara, utmost devotion in Is'vara, and strength in your soul.”

At these words of the goddess Parvati, Sri Krisna, accepted her behest gracefully.

Thereafter, lord Shiva bestowed his blessings on Krisna.” Lord Shiva, after holding the hand of Lord Krisna, getting adored by the gods and the sages, retreated to mount Kailasa accompanied by the goddess Parvati.
