Lessons 32, 33. The aim of the lesson is to teach you to pronounce new English consonant sounds, to train your reading and spelling abilities. We’ll also train the use of the verb TO BE. Ex. 1. Listen to pairs of words. Show the red card if the words are different and the green card if they are the same. Ex. 3. The pronunciation of groups of consonants: /pbkg, tdpb, fvw, zs/. Ex. 4. The pronunciation of vowel sounds within the same consonant frames. Beat, bit, bet, bat, bite.     Wheel, will, well, wail, while. Kit, cat, Kate, cart, kite.    Heat, hit, hate, height, heart. Ex. 5. Brush up the rules of reading: read out the pairs that are pronounced in the same way, and then all the pairs that are pronounced differently: Pan-pane, die-dye, weave-wave, Blake-black, pale-pail, been-bean, mile-mail, Ned-need, tittle-title, kettle-cattle, whale-wail, white-vile, lick-like, sick-seek, sale-sail, sickle-cycle. Ex. 6. Brush up the rules of spelling: spell these words: /seil/, /baik/, /kid/, /stik/, /vail/, /raetl/, /pikl/, /traek/.                                                     Ex. 7. Write down the words pronounced by the teacher Ex. 8. See and learn the rules of spelling and reading. Train to pronounce the following consonants [ʃ] The lips are rounded and slightly protruded. Touch the back slope of the alveoli with the tip of the tongue. The middle part of the tongue is raised towards the palate. The sound is soft, like in the words шишки [ шишки ], but don’t make soft Russian Щ sound.  Pronounce with the English accent Шип, шишки, шиншилла. Шиншилла пришила на шинель шишку для шика. [ ʒ ] It is pronounced in the same way as [ ʃ ], but it is voiced. It is softer than Russian Ж .

Pronounce with the English accent

Жир, животное, жидкий, жаба. Жадная жаба не жужжит.

[h] The pronunciation of the fricative pharingal voiceless consonant /h/. It is not at all like the Russian back-lingual /x/! Keep the back of the tongue away from the soft palate and breathe the air out freely. It is a pure sound of breath, almost noiseless.

Холод, холоп, хей. Хей, холоп, хорошая у тебя выхухоль.

Ex. 10. Read these short monologues (look up and say!). Mark stresses.

(a) Ann meets Sid. I'm afraid I can't. I feel bad. I need a pill.

(b) Nancy is very strange: she is never late. She is in time every day!

Ex. 11. Practice in reading English tongue twisters.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers;
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked;
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
Zebras zig and zebras zag
— Зебры ходят зигзагом.
(The) big bug bit (the) little beetle, but (the) little beetle bit (the) big bug back — Большой жук укусил маленького жука, но маленький жук укусил большого жука в ответ.
Ex. 12. Continue each monologue (4-5 sentences)

Ex. 13. Tell your friend that you like something you have. Let your friend say what she thinks of it: Mark stresses and tones.

- I like my bag. I believe it is nice. (car, cat, flat, pen, cap, dress).

- It's natural. (It's a matter of taste. It isn't bad, It is nice)

 

Ex. 14. Articles. Show your red card for the indefinite, green for definite and yellow for the zero article.

Ex. 15. Supplement 1. Verb TO BE (am, is, are). Ex. 1.3 – 1.4.

Ex. 1. Find the countable nouns in the list below and give the plural form: card, Italy, garden, park, waiter, wine, jam, pleasure, decision, class, exercise, paper, pen, memory, sister, desk, aunt.
