What are the sources of religious belief? How does science present itself as a reaction to religious doctrines and codes?

5. The ethical doctrines of Christianity are in the main based on two sources: the Old Testament, and Greek philosophy, particularly Stoicism and Neoplatonism. Jesus of Nazareth taught men to deal with one another impartially and mercifully and announced that the God of the Jews was the one and only God for all men. His message, at first preached only to the Jews, was spread to the rest of the Roman Empire through the efforts of Paul of Tarsus, a Hellenistic Jew, who broke the external links of the new religion with Judaism. Paul’s moral views were expressed with more severity than those of Jesus.

The Christian way of life was variously understood at different times. To the early hermits it meant a turning away from the world; to the monks, a life of service and prayer in seclusion. The Christian knights of the Middle Ages saw themselves as defenders of Christianity against the infidel Moslems.
Can Christianity be summed up as “a set of ethical doctrines”?

6. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

“Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the Earth.”

“Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.”

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

What is the global meaning of each doctrine?
