Questions dealing with the process of anticipation in reading (which means putting forward hypotheses and either discarding or justifying them)

The story begins with “They”. Find details that justify the hypothesis what the word “they” means. Find other instances when the first word of the paragraph finds its justification within the passage.

How can our hypothesis about the time and place of action be verified?

What is the mood of the character(s)/ What state is (are) the character(s) in?

What is the conflict between the characters?

Questions dealing with the so-called “intentional coincidence” (the implied meaning of factual details appealing to our senses)

a) characterise the rhythm of the narration as a means that influences the reader’s emotions (e.g. the rhythm of marching is demonstrated in the 2nd sentence, with its regular distribution of stressed syllables).

b) Find words and word combinations denoting colour that help to perceive the emotional atmosphere of the narration.

c) Find words and word combinations denoting tactile sensory details.

d) As far as phonetic means go, analyse, for instance, the similarities and differences of meaning of such verbs similar in sound arrangement as “glare”, “glitter”, “glisten”, “gleam” (see paragraph 1). Look for some other instances of intentional sound similarities and try to account for them.
