I. POLLUTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
The air we breathe, the earth we live on, rivers and seas are becoming polluted with dangerous materials. Man depends for his life on what the biosphere provides: water, oxygen, food. Now the biosphere is strongly affected by human activities. Man creates new substances, which are unknown to biosphere. Materials like paper and glass can be reused, but many materials, especially plastics cannot be reused and cannot be absorbed by the earth. New compounds do not belong to the natural cycle of matter. They weaken processes for self-regulation. We change the environment in which we live.
Production of new machines, goods and services uses energy and natural resources (oil, gas, coal, wood etc.). All these things are used faster than they can be replenished.
The increasing noise level is a special problem. We need silence as much as we need fresh air and unpolluted water. Many cities now are too noisy to live in.
Transport is a major source of environmental pollution. Its exhaust gases contain poisonous carbon dioxide. Sea- and river-going ships pollute water with various oil products. Oil spread over the water surface and prevents air-water oxygen exchange.
Plants pollute the atmosphere with their wastes. They destroy the ozone layer, which protects us from the dangerous light of the Sun. They also destroy forests, which are dying from acid rains.
Our planet belongs to our children and if we want our children to live in a healthier world we must do everything to protect our Earth from the catastrophe.

Modern life is impossible without travelling. To understand how true this is, you only have to go to a railway station, a port or an airport. There you will see hundreds of people hurrying to catch a train, a ship or a plane, all wanting to go somewhere and to get there as quickly as possible.
Of course the fastest way of travelling is by plane. With a modern air-liner you can now travel in one day to places which it took a month or more to get to a hundred years ago. All you have to do is to ring up the air-line booking-office, and they will send your ticket to your home. You can go to the airport in a bus, getting there just in time to hand in your luggage and board the plane. The seats on the plane are comfortable, and you can sit and read, look out of the window, or sleep until you arrive at your airport. You can have breakfast in Moscow, dinner in London or Paris and supper in New York on the same day.
Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it also has its advantages. You can see the country you are travelling - through, and not only the clouds as when you are flying. Modern trains have very comfortable seats in all passenger carriages, and there are sleeping-cars and dining-cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable.
Some people prefer to travel by ship.
