A O U (back vowels)
I E (middle vowels)
Д Ц Y (front vowels)
In a single (=not compound) Finnish word there can be either:
A) only back vowels / back vowels + middle vowels: AUTO, LAULU (a song), TUOLI (a chair), TUOTE (a product)
B) only front vowels / front vowels + middle vowels: TYЦ (work), ETELД (south), ДITI (mother), TIETДД (to know) OR
C) only middle vowels: TIE (a road), EI (no)
Many endings have two choices: front and back vowel versions. If you need to add an ending to the word, the harmony vowels (A, O, U, Д, Ц, Y) define whether we choose a front vowel ending or a back vowel ending. If the word only has middle vowels, then you must choose the front vowel ending. Examples:

To both of these questions you can also answer:
