Order Pinnipedia – Walruses and Seals

1. Despite the similarities in their appearances, imposed by the demands of an aquatic life, the modern Pinnipedia are probably descendants of two stocks with separate origins. Both stem the Carnivora as recently as 25 million years ago. The seals have an otter-like ancestor, the eared seals and walruses have a bear-like ancestor.

2. The first phocid is found in the early Miocene, 20 million years ago in central France, and their radiation has taken them from the Arctic, through temperate marine habitats, to the tropics. There is even a remnant population in inland fresh water (Lake Baikal Seal). Eared seals and walruses evolved slightly earlier in the late Oligocene. Although the dual origin of the Pinnipeds is generally accepted, one fossil, Enaliarctos (23 million years ago), shows signs of descent from bears and has both seal-like (thrusting hind flippers) and eared-seal (strokes of foreflippers) characteristics.

3. Walruses appeared at the same time as fur seals, looking at first quite like modern sea lions. From about 5-10 million years ago they were the most abundant and diverse Pinnipeds in the Pacific. By the end of the Miocene at least five genera of walrus migrated through the Central American Seaway (in an area close to where Panama is today) to the Atlantic and crossed to Europe in the early Pliocene. Their progenitors then became extinct in the Pacific, which was later re-populated when descendants of the Atlantic lineages travelled back via the Arctic ocean. At first walruses ate fish, but some started to eat mollusks, as does the only remaining species, the Walrus.

4. All Pinnipeds have many aquatic adaptations (blubber, large body, streamlining, oily fur, and adaptations of their circulatory and respiratory systems). They are tied to the sea for food, but must give birth on land (a dangerous period which they minimize by virtue of rich milk and rapid growth of the young). Pinnipeds have well developed eyes, no collar bone and short, stout forelimb bones. Eared seals (sea lions) retain the terrestrial art of wriggling their hind-flippers into a position under the hind end of the body to support themselves on land, and can use them to shove themselves forward. In contrast, true or hair seals’ rear flippers contribute nothing to their movement on land, where they drag themselves forward with their forelimbs. The pinnipeds feet, which may be longer than the rest of the short limbs to which they are attached, are webbed.

5. The Pinnipedia include at least 14 extinct genera, 17 modern genera and 33 modern species. In Europe today they are represented by 8 species in 7 genera, from two of the three families (no eared-seals occur in Europe).

A Long Time Hatching

Fossil dinosaur eggs are quite common, but dinosaur eggs with embryonic remains inside are rare. So a remarkable site in Patagonia, where thousands of eggs dating to the Upper Cretaceous (70 million years old) are scattered over a 1 km2 area and a high proportion contain embryonic remains, is causing quite a stir in palaeontological circles. Over a dozen complete eggs and 40 fragments have so far yielded embryonic material including many pieces of bone and the first known casts of embryonic skin (pictured). These Patagonian embryos are probably titanosaurs, and this identification means that the megaloolithid type of dinosaur eggshell can now confidently be associated with sauropod dinosaurs.
