Ex. 1. Agree or disagree with the following statements. Correct them if necessary

1. Exporting to only one country is a very reliable and profitable business. 2. Paul asks Chris’s advice about exporting to different countries. 3. Chris thinks that Jayal Motors should start by exporting to Japan. 4. Jayal Motors was mentioned as one of the Industria’s more successful ventures in the export field. 5. Jayal Motors exports 12 percent of their bikes to the USA. 9. The chief targets of the import restrictions are Industria’s trading partners in the developing countries.

Ex. 2. Read attentively a selection of the articles which appeared in the Industrian and Zuritanian press around the time that Industria imposed import restrictions. There is one spelling error in each of the articles. Find these mistakes and correct them. Decide which of these titles is the most suitable for which article:

A. Infant industry grows up.

B. Mr. Kahn to visit Industria.

C.  Success of developing nations conference.

D. Industria imposes import restrictions .

E.  Zuritania affected by Industrian restrictions.

F. Zuritania to lift import controls.

The articles were not all printed at the same time. Decide in which order the articles were printed.

1. The conference of developing nations held in Centreville all this week has met with success. The Industrian Minister of Trade, Mr. Maciva, announced this morning that the ristrictions are being lifted in the case of developing countries. He said that Industria had always had a policy of helping the developing world and that he hoped the lifting of the restrictions would be taken as proof of Industria’s good will. Mr. Maciva denied that Zuritania’s lifting of some of her own restrictions had influenced his decision, although he congratulated Zuritania on the recent growth in her trade figures.

2. Mr. Kahn, the Zuritanian Minister of Trade, last night announced plans to lift import controls for certain goods. Zuritania’s import controls were originally imposed to protect her infant industries, but the government is satisfied that many of the industries, the controls were designed to protect, are now sufficiently established to compete with the outside world.             А representative of the Export Development Office named Jayal Motors as an example of a firm which has expanded considerably. Jayal Motors have recently started exporting mopeds to Industria where they face world compitition.

3. One of the Zuritania’s infant industries, that of moped manufacturing, has proved that it can compete with the world. Jayal Motors Ltd., until recently a small family business selling mopeds on the home market, proved that Zuritanian bikes can compete successfully, even with the Japanese. It is only just over six months since Jayals won their first export order in Industria, but yesterday they announced a new order from the United States. Mr. Paul Osman, Jayal’s new Managing Director, told me that they have even had an inquiry from a Japanese buyer.

Succes stories such as this are forcing the government to consider the possibility of lifting Zuritanian import controls which were originally designed to protect our infant industries - like moped manufacturing.

Financial advisors in the city warned that Zuritania will certainly be affected by the new Industrian import controls. Approximately 60 percent of Zuritania’s expots go to Industria, representing an annual income of 750,000 utiles. Quota restrictions will mean a 20 percent drop in this figure and there are fears that the new import licences and higher tariffs will lead to an even greater fall in the number of Zuritanian goods imported by Industria. Mr. Kahn, Zuiritania’s Minister of Trade has contacted other developing countries with a view to holding an emergency conference to discuss the effects of the restrictions and possible retaliatory measures.

5.Late last night the Industrian government announced new measures to protect the economy. These measures include imposing import controls. Although Minister of Trade Mr. Maciva announced that the trade restrictions were «selective and temporary», they apply to most goods from all countries. Industria has had a balance of payments defisit for some time now, but there are fears in the capital that Industria’s trading partners may retaliate by restricting imports from Industria.

6. Mr. Kahn, the Zuritanian Minister of Trade, is preparing to leave for Industria tomorrow. He will attend the emergency conference of developing nations, which is being held in Centreville. Representatives of eight countries will discuss their possible examption from Industria’s newly-imposed import controls. The Industrian Trade minister, Mr.Maciva, is expected to attend the talks later in the week.

Everyone at a celebration party.

Tom:I’d like to propose a toast! We have a lot to celebrate this evening. First, welcome home to Carl.

Everyone:Welcome home, Carl.

Tom:Next, I propose a toast to the new limited company of Jayal Motors.

Everyone:Cheers. To Jayal Motors Ltd.!

Tom:And finally a toast to Eve, who has just won the company’s first order in the USA.

Everyone:Cheers! Well done..

Tom:Well, Carl, your diplomats certainly did a good job over that import restrictions business.

Carl: Well, the developing countries managed to exert some pressure, and the fear that the developing world might retaliate by excluding Industrian goods from their markets probably made the government there think twice about taking such action again. But we’ve got to spread our export and not be too dependent on any one market. That’s why this American order is a step in the right direction.

Chris:Jack, I’ve heard you are off to New York soon to give some demonstrations of the new bike.

Jack: Yes, next week.

Paul: By the way, Do you know what I’ve been thinking about. To avoid import restrictions, why don’t we build our bikes overseas, as well as export them.

Tom:Oh, no! Not another bright idea! Quick, someone, give him another drink.

Paul: Listen, listen, it would get us inside the protection net of import restrictions.

Jack: Right, there would be a big market on the doorstep. We could save on transport costs.

Carl: It would reduce the cost of spare parts which we import from the developed world.

Eve:And the recipient government couldn’t really object because we’d be helping to create jobs.

Paul: Absolutely. What do you say, Kamal?

Kamal:What I say is, here is to Jayal Motors Ltd... I can see it’s going to be around for a long time!

Everyone:Cheers!
