ТСО profiles all types of solid waste generated and stored at Tengiz. The waste's hazard class and profile is determined through experimental method by an independent lab. A waste profile contains necessary information about the waste including name, list of hazardous characteristics, composition, toxicity and safety precautions when handling the waste. Republic of Kazakhstan legislative requirements and international standards for waste management form the basis of TCO's Waste Management System. TCOs process of integrated waste management is represented in the form of pyramid, the waste management hierarchy.   The first step in the hierarchy is waste formation reduction. This is achieved through the materials and chemicals stock management, improvement of work processes and substitution of materials. A waste formation inventory is carried out and a forecast is performed annually.        The Waste Management Group looks for opportunities to reuse waste as the result of the production process. For example, used tires are used at landfills to strengthen their protective layer. Wastes that are not reused are treated within the company or handed over to a third party to reduce the volume and class of hazard. For instance, medical waste is treated by TCO, but recycling of some batteries, used oil and scrap metal is handled by contactors. Waste that is not reused, recycled or treated is buried at specially equipped landfills with environmental protection systems. The basic principles of waste formation reduction are registration, control and planning. TCO annually makes an inventory of waste and develops a waste management program which is then reviewed and approved by controlling bodies.

TCO's waste management system gives significant importance to the reuse of waste. TCO treats or hands over for treatment to contractors waste containing mercury and construction waste, scrap metal, used oils and much more. Selection of a contractor organization for waste treatment is made through an audit. The audit is carried out by TCO Waste Management Group specialists who evaluate compliance methods, equipment and environmental and safety requirements. TCO has selected Karachaganak Support Services (Aksai), Krug VK Company (Semipalatinsk) and MAEK (Aktau) as contractors for waste treatment and recycling. Karachaganak Support Services (Aksai) handles the processing and recycling of used oil. Used luminescent lamps and other wastes containing Mercury are handled by MAEK (Aktau) or West Dala (Atyrau), where mercury is extracted for its reuse. Scrap wood is donated to the communities of neighboring villages free of charge to be as construction material or as fuel. TCO applies different methods of waste treatment along with recycling and recovery to reduce waste toxicity level. They include biological methods (composting), thermal methods (desorption and burning), chemical methods (stabilization) and physical methods (gravity separation, filtration or centrifuging). TCO uses equipment to utilize and treat waste and principles of their work are based on the above-mentioned methods. This equipment includes a medical waste neutralization unit, thermal desorption unit, centrifuge, drum steaming and a crushing unit.
