Whenever you see an old film, you cannot help being struck by the appearance of the women taking part. Their hair-styles and make-up look dated, their skirts look either too long or too short, their general appearance is slightly ludicrous. As for men there is nothing about their appearance to suggest they belong to an entirely different age.
Over the years the great majority of men have successfully resisted all attempts to make them change their style of dress. The same cannot be said of women. Each year a few so-called "top designers" in Paris or London lay down the law and women the whole world over rush to obey. The decrees of the designers are unpredictable and dictatorial.
If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame, as they shudder at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are annually blackmailed by the designers and big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be discarded because of the dictates of fashion. Many women squander vast sums of money each year to replace them.
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, providing they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time smiled at the sight of a woman shivering in a flimsy dress on a wintry day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in dainty shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Men are too sensible to let themselves be bullied by fashion designers.

Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comment is made from generation to generation and it is always true. The young are better educated. They have a lot more money to spend and enjoy their freedom. They grow up more quickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They think more for themselves and do not blindly accept the ideals of their elders. Events which the older generation remembers vividly are nothing more than past history. This is as it should be.
The old always assume they know best for the simple reason they have been around a bit longer. They don't like to feel that their values are being questioned or threatened. And this is precisely what the young are doing. They take leave to doubt that the older generation has created the best of all possible worlds. What they reject more than anything is conformity. Office hours, for instance, are nothing more than enforced slavery. Wouldn't people work best if they were given complete freedom and responsibility? If we turn our minds to more serious matters, who said that human differences should be solved through violent means? Why have the older generation so often used violence to solve their problems? Why are they so unhappy and guilt-ridden in their personal lives, so obsessed with mean ambitions and the desire to amass more and more material possessions? Can anything be right with the rat-race?
These are not questions the older generation can shrug off lightly. Traditionally the young have turned to their elders for guidance. Today the situation might be reversed. The old could learn a thing or two from their children. One of the biggest lessons they could learn is that enjoyment is not "sinful". Enjoyment is a principle one could apply to all aspects of life. It is surely not wrong to live in present rather than in the past or future.
