MASS MEDIA

1. We live in the world of information. It is everywhere and sometimes it is even more valuable than money.

2. Mass media, that is newspapers, magazines, radio, television and the Internet, play a big role in our society. They inform, educate, entertain and give us any kinds of information.

3. Television plays an important part in our life too and many people prefer watching television to reading a newspaper.

4. There are also a lot of educational programs, children's programs, films and soap operas on TV. Talk shows are also very popular with people nowadays. I usually watch news and films on television. My favourite TV program is ….

5. Radio is less popular than newspapers and television. People listen to the radio in cars and at work.

6. Nowadays there are daily, weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines. My family is subscribed to Komsomolskaya Pravda which is one of the most famous Russian daily newspapers.

7. I read it sometimes just to know what is happening in the world. My mother buys women's magazines and my father reads sports magazines. There are also a lot of children's magazines. They are colourful and full of pictures.

8. The Internet is the newest kind of mass media. The Internet is the greatest source of information. Almost everything can be found there. If you have the Internet, you may not read newspapers or listen to the radio. You may not watch television either. All main newspapers and television companies have websites, so you can read news and watch television without turning on a TV-set.

9. I use the Internet very often.

10. There are advantages and disadvantages of mass media.

11. The advantages are the following: mass media educate and entertain people. However, you need to have a TV-set to watch television, a radio set to listen to the radio. To look for information in the Internet you will need a computer and the Internet connection and they both cost a lot. Another disadvantage is that sometimes this or that information is not reliable. The Internet is full of sites with wrong information.

12. In spite ofall disadvantages, people still watch TV, listen to the radio and browse the Internet.

O. Henry

1.William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American short story writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings.

He wrote nearly 600 stories about life in America.

2.Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City anddealfor the most part with ordinary people: clerks, policemen, waitresses, etc.

3.Porterattendedschool for a short time, then clerked in an uncle's drugstore. At the age of 20 William Sydney Porter went to Texas, working first on a ranch and later as a bank teller. In 1887 he married and began to write freelance sketches.

4.William Sydney Porter was imprisoned in Columbus, Ohio indicted in 1896 for embezzling bank funds .

5.While in prison he began writing short stories in order to support his young daughter Margaret. His first published story was "Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking" (1899). He used a pseudonym['s(j)uːdənɪm], Olivier Henry, only once and changed his pen name to O. Henry, not wanting his readers to know he was in jail. He published 12 stories while in prison.

6. He moved to New York City, where over the next ten years before his death in 1910, he published over 300 stories and gained worldwide fame as America's favorite short story writer.

7. O. Henry's trademark is his witty, plot-twisting endings, and his warm characterization of the awkward['ɔːkwəd] and difficult situations and the creative ways people find to resolvethem.

8. O. Henry’s most famous story, “The Gift of the Magi['meɪʤaɪ],” translated and reprinted every Christmas around the world, was written in three hours to meet a deadline that O. Henry had ignored for several days.

9. The plot alone—a young woman sells her long beautiful hair to buy her husband a fob chainfor his prized watch, only to discover that he has sold his watch to buy a set of tortoiseshell['tɔːtəʃʃel] combsfor her vanished hair—is enough to make the story a classic about the spiritof Christmas.

There are also psychological novels, collections of short stories, the immortal classics.

7. Although Library Online Resources are available 24/7, the Internet has fewer archival[ɑː'kaɪv(ə)l] materials , moreover the Internet is not organized well and doesn’t have any quality control.

Friends are very important in our life.

I think we cannot live without friends.

The most important thing for being good friends, in my opinion, is to be ready to help one another in any situation.

Andnever mind, that the friends may have different interests and hobbies, different likes and dislikes.

They say that a friend in need is a friend indeed.I think it is really so.

Let me tell you about my best friend.

………………. is a good friend of mine.

He is 11(10). He goes to the …… form.

He is tall and slim. ………………… has got ………. eyes, short …….. hair, small nose, ….

My friend and I always do our best to help one another.

My friend is a very good, kind and clever boy.

When we have some free time, we go for a walk, read and discuss books, watch films.

Both of us are fond of sport.

We go in for ……………………………………………………. together.

I love my friend very much. I think he is a true friend.

Our friendship is very importantto me and I try to do my best to be a good friend too.

  • A friend is someone who likes you and is there for you unconditionally - not because you're rich, attractive, or popular - but because you're being yourself.
  • Friends will motivate us when we’re ready to give up, and they can look after us when life falls apart. Friends are there when all is well, and we want someone to share life’s pleasant and memorable moments. We often just want them around, to have a good time, to laugh, to act silly, to enjoy some mutually liked activity.
  • We can tell a lot about friendship and friends. You may have a lot of friends but try to get a friend who is loyal, trustworthy to us and be like that to your friend also. That is the only meaning of friendship. Be loyal and trusty.
  • The good fellow to everyone is a good friend to no one.
