One of your workers does not get on well with his/her colleagues. You are planning to have a talk with him/her.

a) You are the Department Manager. Before meeting your worker you have looked through his/her CV and have talked with his/her colleagues.

b) You like your new job, but you find it difficult to make friends with new people. As you are a very shy person it always takes you some time to feel at home with a new team.

a) The owner of a small company is talking to the Personnel Manager. He wants to discuss whether John White, one of the junior executives, should or should not be appointed to a more senior post in the company. The owner of the company is not sure that John White is the right person.

b) You are the Personnel Manager and you are for promoting John White. Try to persuade the conversation partner.

 

Situation 3

 

Some workers from a manufacturing department are complaining about their working conditions.

The Senior Manager invites his/her subordinate to discuss the problem.

a) The Senior Manager disagrees with the complaints. He/she thinks that working conditions are much better compared with other companies.

b) His/her subordinate who knows the situation better has some proposals:

1. Make salary increase.

2. Bring some changes into the working hours.

3. Install new equipment, etc.

Situation 4

 

Your products are not sold well. The company Chairman is having a talk with the senior manager in the Advertising Department.

a) The company Chairman thinks that the advertising campaign hasn’t been successful this year. He wants to review the plan for next year.

b) The Senior Manager agrees that they should discuss the future plans together. He also believes that his department might have done better if they had been given more money for advertising.

a) You are the Personnel Manager for IBM. You want to create good conditions for the employees and to build up better employee-manager relationships. One of key policies is the Open Door program. However, your partner, the Senior Manager, disagrees with your opinion.

b) You are the Senior Manager at IBM. You disagree with the idea of introducing an Open Door policy suggested by your colleague. You think that it will have some disadvantages. For example, employees would take a day off in order to appeal to a higher level management to solve their problems.

a) You are a manager attending a scientific conference. In the lounge you start talking to another participant of the conference. Give brief details about yourself and the organization you work for.

b) You are a manager participating in the work of a conference. One of the participants speaks to you. Introduce yourself, speak about your company. Discuss with your partner how conference issues might be implemented in your respective organisations.

Situation 7

a) You have just been appointed the Senior Manager in the Production Department. You are eager to introduce some changes in the department. You’ve made up your mind to discuss your ideas first with your Junior Manager. You think it will be a good idea if you introduce a flextime schedule, give your workers a chance to participate in planning their job activities, etc.

b) You are the Junior Manager at the same department. You do appreciate the Senior Manager’s attempts to improve the situation in the department. You think that in order to achieve the department’s objectives you should be one team.

Situation 1

a) You are the Manager of the Supply Department. You make a phone call to order computers of the latest model needed for your company. You want to know if they are in stock and if it is possible to deliver them urgently. Discuss prices and delivery terms. Ask for a 10% discount, order eight computers.

b) You work in the Sales Department. A customer phones you to order computers of the latest model. Give him/her detailed information. Tell him/her a 10% discount is not available in your company, insist on a 6% discount. Promise him/her to send computers straight away after he/she confirms the order in writing. Agree at a 8% discount.

 

Situation 2

a) You are the Manager of a local construction company. You meet the Manager of a foreign company that is responsible for supplying experienced construction engineers to your organisation. Now you are discussing whether to recruit local or foreign builders. You think that you should employ local ones, as it will help to reduce the rate of unemployment in the region.

b) You are the Manager of a foreign construction company. As you are not sure about local builders’ qualification, you want to recruit foreign builders and transfer them to Kazakhstan. But to the end of the conversation you do agree to recruit local people and share your company’s experience with them.

Situation 3

a) You are the Managing Director of the Electronic Company. You are having a meeting with the Senior Executive to discuss staff morale. You feel that many of employees are not happy with their work, and that this is affecting their work efficiency. You discuss how to develop a high morale and motivate people to work harder.

b) You are the Senior Executive of the same company. The Managing Director has invited you to discuss how to develop a high morale in the company and to motivate people to work harder. You think that the productivity of the workers will increase if conditions are made better. You suggest carrying out an opinion survey to find out what the staff really thinks about.

 

Situation 4

a) You are the Managing Director of the Soft Drinks Plant. You are having a meeting with the Union Representative. You discuss the question of the staff moral. You feel that most of the employees are not satisfied with their jobs. You have carried out the opinion survey and you have the results of it.

b) You are the Union Representative of machine operators. You think that creating good working conditions is the solution of the problem. You suggest discussing some demands put forward by workers.

 

Situation 5

 

a) You are a company executive. This conversation takes place in your office. When your colleague comes to visit you, he/she finds you in a happy mood because your stockbroker has phoned to tell you the shares you had bought incredibly shot up. You want to share your joy with someone.

b) You come to your colleague and find him/her in a happy mood. You are glad to hear his/her story. You discuss the activity of the company the shares of which your colleague has bought.

Situation 6

a) Your company has been developing a new product that has several sophisticated features. You are confident it might be a world-beater soon. Unfortunately, you have spent a fortune on the project development costs. Because of this, the company is on the verge of going bankrupt. You need a lot of money to finance the final stage of the project and to ensure that the launch of the product will be successful. After a number of banks refused to lend the money you need, you contact a smallbut well-known bank which sometimes provides development capital for firms like yours.

b) You are the Chairman of a bank. The bank receives many requests for financial assistance. If you like your customer’s project, you lend a loan to his/her firm or invest money in it in return of shareholding. Give your customer some options.

 

 

Situation 7

a) The company you work for is planning to transfer you overseas. You phone your colleague who has just arrived from there. You have never worked in a foreign country before and you are worried about it. You’d like to ask your colleague some questions about people, culture, traditions, climate, etc.

b) You understand your colleague’s feelings. But you think that there is nothing to worry about. You are ready to give him/her all the necessary information.

Situation 8

a) You are the Operations Manager of Rakhat Company Limited, a manufacture of Confectionery products. You receive a phone call from the Head of Research and Development. He/she has some bad news about a new, product his/her department is developing.

b) You are the Head of Research and Development. You have some problems with a product your department is developing at the moment. It’s a biscuit consisting of wafer covered with chocolate. Phone the Operations Manager to share your troubles.
