Practical assignment:

1. Define the type of phrases given below according to:

a) the kind of syntactic relation between the components;

b) the number of the components;

c) the position of the components;

d) the morphological characteristics of the components:

an old man, an evening paper,

typically English appearance, the roof of the house,

the letter written in pencil, reading a book.

 

2. Compare syntactic and semantic relations in phrases:

a problems to discuss, John’s sister, John’s hat,

John’s arrival, John’s arrest,

 a dancing girl, a dancing hall.

 

Give examples of different types of sentences (structural and communicative)

Compare the structure of sentences in Russian and English. Comment on the difference.

Ей обещали помочь. -  She was promised help.

С ним трудно иметь дело. - He is difficult to deal with.

Compare primary and secondary predication.

Topics for discussion:

1. Syntactic structure. The general theory of points of the sentence (the model of parts of the sentence)

    2. Surface structure. Distributional model. Types of distributions. Distributional (positional) classes of words: form-classes and function words.

2. Define the type of the predicate in the following sentences:

3. Define the function of the underlined words:

1.This film, of course, is the best one. 2. She was extraordinarily busy that day. 3.There were just group pictures. 4. I don’t expect you to go there. 5.She turned round, her lips white.

4. Fill in the blanks with function words:There was … coffee – pot … …. gas –ring. …. stewardess …. ….. tray of sweets showed them in. What are you thinking ….?

5. Draw the IC – model and the derivational tree for the following sentences:

The woman sniffed the rose. The police shot the man in the right arm. The police shot the man in the red cap.

6. “Denominalize” the phrases:

The invitation of the writer, the roaring of the lion, the shooting of lions, the shooting of hunters.

7. State the deep structure of the sentences:

8.Compare the semantic structure of the following sentences:

8. Define the means of expressing the rheme.Translate into Russian:
