How to behave during an interview

An interview is an important event in the life of every job applicant. It can be a test on the way to a new position. That’s why it’s very important to be well prepared for an interview.

It is evident that getting a job depends on many factors, among them writing correctly a cover letter, a resume, and your behaviour during an interview. The later is often the best and the most important stage in getting a job.

The interview is an opportunity for the applicant to project his/her personality and convince the interviewers of his/her suitability for the job.

Here are some useful pieces of advice for those who are going to an interview :

ü Pay attention to the way you are dressed. When you are properly dressed you demonstrate respect and consideration for those with whom you interact. Your hairstyle, nails and choice of cosmetics will contribute to your appearance. Your clothing should meet the requirements of business style. It’s very important that in your suit you should feel comfortable.

ü Be ready to speak about yourself. Your words should contain something to make people take notice of you. Describe briefly your experience at the job, good results you achieved there. Remember your speech should be more than the words you use, How you say sometimes is as important as what you say.

ü Be yourself – just speak the way you speak with your friends. During the speech smile and try to change your facial expression to convey the emotions that you feel. A smile coupled with good posture can work wonders. You should not look at the floor or at the ceiling. Look in the eyes of the people you are talking to. Your speech is certain to be enthusiastic and lively.

ü A standard question you may be asked – “Why are you looking for a job?” You should be ready to speak about reasons which sound convincing

ü You should organize your thoughts logically, have self-confidence, never distort facts and try to persuade people of your way of thinking.

ü Come in time to the appointed place for an interview. Don’t forget to take all necessary documents for your better presentation (references, characteristics, diplomas).

ü Don’t be nervous and tense with the interviewer, be polite and listen attentively to all questions you are asked. If you are confident in what you are talking about it will make a good impression on the interviewer. Try to give full and clear answers to the questions. Be ready to discuss the details of your future work. Try to persuade the interviewer that you are the best candidate for the chosen position and asset for the company. Don’t talk about personal questions if they are not connected with the future work.

ü Don’t hesitate to describe fully your responsibilities and regular duties at the previous job if you are asked.

ü At the end of the interview thank the interviewer for his/her attention. Don’t demand the immediate answer about his/her decision, appoint the certain date for it.

Prepare for the specific interview situation

Just as you conducted research to prepare for writing letters and making contacts, find out as much specific information about the company as you can.

Think about what company employees might ask you. Employers have an interest in your skills, your knowledge, and your achievements and how these have prepared you to contribute to what they do. Their interest is in how you can add value to what they do and how well you will fit in. From what you tell about yourself, potential employers will make decisions about hiring you or someone else. Plan ahead. Before the interview, plan general answer and approaches to the following questions often asked in interviews:

ü What is your greatest achievement?

ü What skills did you use on your last job?

ü What areas of knowledge can you highlight?

Plan for the interviewers to ask questions in these three areas: Achievements, skills, and knowledge. Although the interviewer may ask the questions in different ways, these areas can give the interview focus and allow you to prepare. Know what features of your background you can highlight during the interview. Remember, you are the only one who knows your background, and effective answers demonstrate how you can contribute to what the company does.

You should also understand why interviewers very often look on interviewees unfavorably. Here are some reasons that employers give for rejecting employees because of interview performance. Study these reasons carefully, and make sure you do not give potential employers such reasons to reject you:

ü Poor appearance

ü Overbearing, aggressive, conceited, superior, or know-it-all attitude

ü Inability to express self clearly – poor voice, diction, and grammar

ü No apparent goals and objectives for career

ü Lack of interest and enthusiasm – passive and indifferent

ü Failure to participate in student activities

ü Overemphasis on money and other fringe benefits

ü Poor scholastic records – just got by

ü Unwilling to start at the bottom – expects too much too soon

ü Makes excuses, is evasive, and hedges on unfavorable factors in records

ü Discourteous, poor manners

ü Late for interview

ü Sloppy resume and application letter

ü Poor eye contact during interview

ü Extreme nervousness

ü Indefinite responses to questions, or talks too much

ü Lack of confidence and poise

ü Condemnation of previous employers or professors

ü Timid, introverted, and lacks assertiveness

ü Indecisive and lacks initiative

ü Unwilling to relocate

ü Questionable long-term potential for advancement
