Lifshitz Ekaterina. Translation strategies for wordplay with vulgar content in the American TV series HIMYM (How I Met Your Mother)



The work is dedicated to the problem of the translation into Russian of the vulgar content wordplay in the TV series HIMYM. Vulgar words and expressions in this study mean taboo ones for moral and ethical reasons. These include, for example, sexual or ethnic-racial obscenities. We investigate how translators handle the transformation of the wordplay of this kind, what techniques they use, and whether the comic effect is preserved. At first, all cases of this wordplay were identified. Then their quantitative and qualitative analysis was carried out. Further we compared two translations of the sitcom and came to conclusions about strategies and methods used by translators, and adequacy of the result obtained. The analysis showed two main translation strategies: accurate reproduction or replacement with the associative links in Russian. Then different types of translation were singled out and ranked, and their qualitative analysis was made. As a result, it was found that the wordplay of vulgar character in more than 50% of the cases refers to sexual topics. In 80% of the cases, the vulgar wordplay was translated in a varying degree. In more than half of the cases, it was translated in a watered-down form. The most commonly used strategy was a direct translation. The watered-down wordplay in Russian translation often looks ridiculous, unnatural, and far from conversational style. In many cases, even an adequately translated wordplay doesn’t have the same comic effect as the original, because it looks illogical, not connected to the story line. Based on the results obtained, we identified difficulties and best methods for effective translation of the vulgar wordplay. All in all, it was concluded that, in spite of some ethical-moral problems arising, the importance of adequate translation of the vulgar wordplay shouldn’t be underestimated, because it plays a significant role in sitcom genre.

Some practical cases used as translator`s exercises during the lessons in military technical translation in military polytechnic academy will be represented during the presentation. Such format helps the students to be attentive while translating and interpreting special abbreviations, proper names, acronyms and backronyms as well as military slang expressions, etc. Some particular cases as well as the possible ways of their solving will be represented during the speech.

 

Silantieva Veronika(St Petersburg State University, Russia). Prosaic rhythm in Modernist narrative: approaches to rendering it into Russian

Modernist literature notable for neology and play of words is an utter challenge for a translator. In fact, some texts, such as Finnegans Wake by James Joyce, are cited as unaccessible for translation. The author argues that the ingenuity of modernist prose is not restricted to multiple lexical meanings. A highly elaborate prosaic rhythm of literary modernism should be analysed and defined, so that the artistic value of such texts could be delivered in a translation. The author distinguishes three types of the modernist rhythm: phonological, lexical, and syntactic. They contribute to narrative time and impose meditative mood on the reader. The article compares three translations of a passage from Finnegans Wake and concludes how the translators manage the complex rhythmical structure.
