Gudkova Kira. Cognitive aspects of argumentative discourse

The paper deals with various types of argumentative discourse within the framework of cognitive approach in linguistics. Under the cognitive approach, argumentative discourse may be considered as discourse containing elements whose goal is to influence the recipient’s view of the world by altering his values and beliefs. Argumentative discourse is a written or oral text containing obligatory elements of argumentation, that is a standpoint and the arguments put forward in defense of the standpoint. All utterances of argumentative discourse perform two communicative functions: argumentative or persuasion function and a particular function that is determined by the goal of the author. Value (axiological) discourse and policy discourse are of great interest. The particular goal of the former is to alter the recipient’s value view of the world and the goal of the latter is the persuasion of the recipient in the necessity (the absence of necessity) to perform certain actions. The impact on the recipient is verbally performed through changing his view of the world and thus his beliefs. The analysis of the verbal expressions is conducted.

Korneeva Ekaterina(St Petersburg State University, Russia). Sabotage as a communicative strategy in dialogue

This paper is devoted to the study of sabotage as one of the communicative strategies used in a dialogue. Frequently a participant of the communication is not ready to answer the question directly. As a result, the participant tries to avoid answering, to change the subject, or to give a vague answer. At the same time, sabotage may range from refusal to respond to attempts at hurting the feelings of the interlocutor and imposing their own opinion on the subject under discussion. Sabotage can have verbal and non-verbal representation. Examples of the communicative sabotage given in this work have been found in the novels by Rex Stout. The results obtained in the study may help to reveal types of the linguistic representation as well as the extralinguistic factors for using such strategy by characters.

KovanovaEvgenia(St Petersburg State University, Russia). Pragmatic functions of British pub signs in diachrony

The paper is aimed at analyzing British pub signs as a type of advertising discourse. Being the synthesis of business and culture, of visual arts and marketing strategy, the pub signs are an integral part of urban semiotics and toponymy; they are culture and nation specific and reflect the world-view and values of a particular ethnic group. The pub sign tradition dates back to the Roman and Anglo-Saxon period of British history, while the pub sign itself has made a long way from an ‘ale-stake’ marking an ale-house to complex polycode entities that are impossible to interpret without taking into consideration both the verbal and non-verbal elements, as well as the background knowledge shared by the members of the local community. Since pub signs are polysemiotic, we find it interesting to consider the correlation between the verbal and iconic elements in diachrony, as well as identify types of creolization in modern pub signs, such as usage of fonts, images, etc. British pub signs help to create a unique identity of a pub and have a great pragmatic potential. Several pragmatic functions can be identified (identification, differentiation, navigation, presentation, attraction, mnemonic, etc.); they have changed with time under the influence of various factors.
