VyshenskaiaYulia. Stylistic syntax forming processes within the scope of the linear dynamics’ conception (based on English medieval literary texts)

The second half of the XIX-th century is marked by the processes of historical stylistics’ forming and strengthening as well as the most substantial methodological reglamentations. Both the opportunity of synchronic and diachronic analysis and the considering the language as a system with a layer organization are the most valuable for historical stylistics. The tendency to stability combined with instability are believed specific characteristics of a language system. The instability evolutional rhythm causes the fact of existing linguistic elements of appearing and disappearing nature. Intensifying of the evolutional rhythm is observed during thе periods of non-stability the example of which one can think High Middle Ages. The quality of non-stability penetrates into all spheres of human activity including language related sphere. Thus, the intellectual scientific section is characterized by the shift of attention to the language philosophy matter connected with re-consideration of a certain number of grammar principles. Middle Ages is a period of national language forming, appearing of national literature processes accompanied by the intensive ones in the segments of the belles-lettres style forming. The idea of literature as a language transformation combined with the one of necessity of the original material to create something causes the impulse of appearing of different stylistic devices, including syntactic ones. As a consequence of a non-balanced state in the sphere of reglamentations determining poetic language as a transformed natural one the fact of changing of antique rhetorics by national rhetorical guides imitating by nature can be believed as such. This proves the double nature of humanistic ideology believed as a combination of respect to ancient authorities as well as so called national nationalism. Syntax is supposed to be analysed in combination with stylistic tendencies of the epoch as it is thought the sphere of the most impressive manifestation of them. The situation in the segment of syntactic stylistic devices expanding in England of the period is characterized by typical but also specific characteristic features.

Besedina Elena, Kuzmich Irina. Considerations on proper names iconic nomination in the literary text

The present paper is dedicated to the problem of iconic words in literary texts. The analysis is based on a representative random sampling of proper nouns drawn from the novels bу British author J. K. Rowling. The novels chosen for this analysis belong to three different literary genres. The analysis showed that the texts of the author in question are characterized by high number of so-called ‘speaking’ names, most of whose lexical elements are iconic. There is some evidence that this particular feature of her idiostyle is irrelevant to the genre of her novels. The choice of a name – be it a character, a place or some fictional subject – is a matter of great importance for the writer. For this purpose J. K. Rowling extensively uses expressive phonetic means. This helps the reader to feel and visualize a nominated object. If it is a positive character a name is likely to be a euphonious name composed of sounds associated with something soft and smooth. On the contrary, a name of a negative one is supposed to contain sounds denoting harsh and unpleasant sounds, movements or light phenomena.

Brodovich Olga, Davydova Varvara. The role of metonymy in sound-symbolic nomination

The paper investigates that part of the primary-motivated lexicon which is sound-symbolic as opposed to sound-imitative one. On the material of sound-symbolic words of natural and fictional languages, the authors explore the cognitive processes of primary nomination. The choice of the words of fictional languages as a source material was dictated by the fact that constructed words do not undergo further diachronic change, which occurs in natural languages, thus allowing to explore processes of primary nomination. As a result, cognitive mechanisms of primary word-formation in fictional and natural languages were found to be similar. The authors conclude that metonymy plays a leading role in nomination processes yielding a special class of sound-symbolism words, namely those denoting phenomena occurring within man’s body.
