SopievaBaian. Theoretical aspects of research into American media discourse

This article explains the methodological aspect of the usage of the term "media discourse", and considered controversial issues of the discursive approach to the study of mass communication, its impact on the cognition. In this work, theoretical principles of this work are based on the modern theory of the theory of mediality (M.McLuhan). In this work an attempt was made to trace how the medial space affects the processes of perception and cognition.

Troshchenkova Ekaterina(St Petersburg State University, Russia). Discourse integration in modern technology-mediated communication

The article deals with the issue of discourse integration in the new conditions of technology-mediated communication and Web 2.0 with its emphasis on co-production of content by many users and their active participation. It is argued that instead of mere discourse interference, in this situation one deals with domain blending, resulting in the emergence of a broader cognitive model. This process has gone further and faster for such discourses as media, political and social, leading to a new, more or less well-formed, sociopolitical domain. However, one can see some integrative manifestations in other spheres as well. As an example, the article discusses a case of across-the-frame interaction for film, fan and media discourses.

Vargina Ekaterina(St Petersburg State University, Russia). Electronic hypertext as a basis for manipulation

The report examines the blogs of a number of non-governmental organizations that have a pronounced political or social orientation. All of them are hypertextual in nature, that is, they are fragments of hypertext. We investigate the means of actualization of hypertextuality, which are used to affect the reader, to interest him and to influence his way of thinking. The rhetorical tools we have identified can be described as rhetorical-technological, since the rhetorical effect on the addressee is carried out both by linguistic means and by means of computer technologies. These tools are divided into means of actualization of knowledge and means of convincing the reader that this knowledge is reliable. We consider such techniques as the location of the material, the encouraging the reader to get acquainted with other fragments of hypertext, the tools that serve to link the reader to the authors and the organization that they represent and the description of the organization activities, placing it in a certain context.

Yakovleva Elena, Agadzhan Ruben. Enhancing communicative impact through the use of linguistic suggestive means

The central piece of modern pragmatic study is a quest for an answer to the question whether it is at all possible to impact the efficiency of interpersonal human communication as well as of what these means of impact are and how they can be enhanced. Contemporary theory of speech acts calls on for a detailed analysis of the relationship the speaker forms with their target audience, the latter being factual, emotional or both. In the process aesthetic evaluative assessments are formed both with respect to the information as such and with respect to the individual characteristics of the participants in the communicative act. The test of the sides’ involvement is their participation in such communicative formats as monologue, dialogue and talk. The presentation focuses on the mechanisms that intensify the communicative process under analysis that reveals its pragmatic potential and makes full use of the semiotic profile of the national language viewed as a semiotic code.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHINGMETHODOLOGY

Doroshko Olga. Reading short stories by Roald Dahl ("Dip in the Pool", "Skin")

In my presentation I would like to show you how we can teach students to extend their vocabulary by means of reading fiction, namely short stories by Roald Dahl. His style, choice of words, plots give ample opportunities to discuss a grest variety of topics within and outside the stories themselves. Firstly, we speak about the writer, then read the text, discuss how it is organised (flashbacks ("Skin"), open ending (both)) and highlight unknown words. Giving definitions we can compile semantic fields, find synonims and opposites. For example, the main character in "Skin" 'shuffles along the street'. How else can a person move?(stride, stagger, wander,..) We can also make lists of words related to some topic ("Skin" - Arts, "Dip in the Pool" -Travel). Why not try and translate the name of the story "Dip in the Pool" in Russian? Here we must take into consideration play on words. Why not speak about Impressionists and Chaim Sutin after reading "Skin" and suggest students going to the General Staff building to explore the collection of Schukin and Morozov? And of course, both stories will make us think and talk about human nature in general.
