Tomberg Olga. Artistic image viewed from the value perspective

The presentation deals with research into an artistic image as a linguocultural phenomenon. A category binding the image and a sphere of culture is a notion of value embedded in a linguocultural concept. The latter acts out as a means of representing national values. Studying conceptual space of the images of Anglo-Saxon literature contributes to reconstructing axiological highlights of the Anglo-Saxon period. Considerable attention is paid to studying anti-values of the given period. Prevalent values associated with the images are represented by the concepts of kinship, God, king, warrior, inner state and riches. War-related values in the conceptual space of female images are caused by a military type of culture which serves as a historical background of the image development. Anti-values reflected in all female images refer to the spheres of devil, death and feud. Conceptual content of the images is influenced by a number of factors: conceptual, picture of the world, genre peculiarities, historical and cultural climate of the epoch under consideration.

VoskanianSirush. The similarities and differences of linguistic units when creating literary characters in plays

Specifying identical and distinctive features of linguistic units, in this case syntagmatic units, makes it possible to determine whether there are invariant, constant linguistic features characteristic of the style of a particular author on the one hand, and of a whole literary trend or genre, on the other. The scope of the analysis can be expanded to include regional varieties, such as British and American English, if we identify similarities and differences between literary portraits created by British and American authors. Through the analysis of words and collocations that create a portrait of the characters and with the help of methods of philological topology, relatively unchanging, constant features on the content, structural- syntactic and functional-stylistic levels were established. The analysis of linguistic units that are used to create a literary portrait (and through it a literary character) revealed that while creating generalized literary images, the invariant characteristics in O.Wilde’s and T.Williams’s plays manifest themselves at a conceptual level and are conditioned by genre features. Structural-syntactic and functional-stylistic invariants are secondary to the conceptual invariant. Portraits by these authors are created based on similarity (either with the national and social type of appearance, or with portraits by particular artists, as in O. Wilde’s play ‘An Ideal Husband”) or based on contrast (as in T. Williams’s play ‘The Streetcar Named Desire’).
