Ipatova Aleksandra(St Petersburg State University, Russia). On the typology of Shakespearean allusions in English literature

The paper is devoted to the analysis of allusions to Shakespearean characters as a stylistic device based on English fiction texts. Shakespearean allusion remains a frequent and important means of interaction between writers and readers. Although the most frequently used work is Hamlet, other Shakespearean plays are also referred to in various texts. Examples of allusions represented in this work have been found in the novels by British, American, Canadian and Australian writers. Analysis of the material has enabled us to suggest that apart from allusions proper there exists a class of partly allusive units. Thus, the analysis shows that Shakespearean references can belong not only to allusive but also to partly allusive units.

Koshkarova Natalia. Bureaucracy anglice (based on British National Corpus data)

The paper is devoted to the analysis of the bureaucracy’s representation in the English language. The author tries to answer the question whether the negative phenomenon under study is connected with the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the society in the framework of which bureaucracy functions. The typological qualities of the English bureaucracy are singled out. The texts from the sub-corpus of the British national corpus – the NOW corpus – serve as the material for analysis. The NOW corpus contains newspaper and magazine publications from 2010 till the present time. The methodological basis for studying bureaucracy as a concept includes the following aspects: 1) the collocation analysis of the lexeme-representatives which lets investigate the discursive realization of the phenomenon under study; 2) the metaphorical comprehension of bureaucracy as a concept with the aim of revealing the society’s attitude towards the described phenomenon. The metaphorical collocation of the term-representative denoting bureaucracy in the English language is one of the important and promising directions of the research. It is explained by the fact that the media-discourse not only reflects the social realm but has been forming the public opinion and has been setting the style of the social perception of these or those phenomena being them positive or negative.

Panasiuk Irina(St Petersburg State University, Russia). Contextual realizations of the English verb to sit with inanimate nouns and their Russian equivalents: linguo-cultural analysis

The paper investigates semantic contexts in which the locative verb to sit is used with nouns denoting inanimate objects. This function of the verb to sit is relatively rare, but it seems to be characterized by a higher frequency in modern fiction than in previous decades. Semantic аnalysis of nouns forming subjects to the verb to sit has shown a considerably larger diversity than could be expected on the basis of the data found in the literature on this theme. It has also confirmed the important role of the adverbial modifiers of place which provide the necessary information of the spatial localization of the inanimate object. It is of some interest to note that in similar sentences in Russian the verb «сидеть» is never used, the equivalents of the English to sit being «лежать» (to lie) and «стоять»(to stand).

ReznichenkoEgor(St Petersburg State University, Russia). The conceptualisation of space in the New Testament

The New Testament which was written in 1st century AD is fundamental text for Christianity. Religious literature is an attractive object of scientific research owing to its metaphoricity and figurativity as well as language and cultural picture of world. The New Testament texts as part of ancient religious literature are interesting because of their conceptualized understanding of space which is not defined by only visible world but implies a sort of multilevel space. Thereby, space concepts obtain specific religious interpretation (for instance, heaven, land, way, up, down, prepositions of space). In real life, they do not have such connotations. The New Testament was written in Ancient Greek which is language of different culture, and the theme of this article is the matter of equivalence in transmission of conceptual content from ancient text to English translations, either old or modern. In this article I will observe various translation examples with comparative analysis and linguocultural commentary.
