AlilovaDzhulietta(St Petersburg State University, Russia). William Blake’s illustrations to Thomas Gray’s poems

Blake found in Gray’s poetry an opportunity to reflect his own feelings concerning the Lower and Upper worlds and а number of respective threshold moments - particularly in his illustrations of Gray’s «gothic odes» («The Descent of Odin», «The Fatal Sisters») and «The Bard. A Pindaric Ode». A great number of Blake’s watercolour illustrations (116 in total!) to Gray’s poetry reveal that both poets were inspired by medieval Gothic. The Gothic influence on their art has been seen through their depiction of space, deities, and mythological heroes by using Gothic art forms to convey mysterious atmosphere and magnificent images.

AstafievaEvgenia. Structural, compositional and linguostylistic peculiarities of comic books

The report studies the peculiarities of comic books, viewing it from the standpoints of structure, composition and linguostylistics. Comic book, being a creolized text, represents a special combination of visual and verbal components. From the point of view of linguostylistics one can easily notice stylization of the characters’ speech, which goes along with the manifestations of language economy. Stylistic devices in the text of a comic book can be often seen in the strong position, at the transition of one page to another.

GashkovaViktoria. Psychoanalytic hermeneutics as a method of studying autobiographical novels

Modern development of humanities as a substantially interdisciplinary phenomenon determines the use of psychoanalytic hermeneutics as a method of studying some aspects of a literary text. This idea mostly concerns autobiographical novels. Such literary works according to their confessional nature may be considered as a succession of scenes. Analyzing those scenes, a scientist gains an opportunity to talk about inner motives of the specific author. Such reasoning allows the researcher to consider the architectonics of an artistic text of an autobiographical nature from a new point of view. This leads to elimination of a number of false interpretations of the text. Thus in some cases protective mechanisms of psyche of the specific author can be regarded as an element of the architectonics of the literary text especially if the researcher faces an autobiographical novel with explicit derivation of narrative structure. Among the most vivid examples of such texts, a novel ‘Joseph Anton’ by Salman Rushdie can be highlighted. Distinctive features of this novel are the violation of the autobiographical pact since there is a third-person narration supplemented with references to the first person and triplication of the narrator.

Gorshkova Elena. The Image of Richard the Lionhearted in W.Scott’s romances “Ivanhoe” and “The Talisman”

The report deals with two romances of W.Scott, which are connected with the Crusades, the first (“Ivanhoe”, 1819) is devoted to the Crusader’s return from the Crusades, the second(“The Talisman”, 1825) considers the events of the third Crusade (1189-1192), where two rival civilizations confront: the West and the East. It is analyzed how W.Scott depicted Richard the Lionhearted in these two romances. In the first romance the king is shown as an ideal monarch and all his activity turned to the benefit of his country, in the second romance the image of Richard the Lionhearted is closer to the real Richard with his pluses and minuses. In both romances W.Scott uses contrast in order to characterize the king’s image. In the romance “Ivanhoe” he counters Richard to unscrupulous prince John. In the romance “The Talisman” Richard is countered to the eastern sultan Saladin, and this is not in favour of Richard. It is stressed that W.Scott uses different techniques, such as the author’s characteristics, physical description, dialogues, monologues etc., in order to create the image of the English king, and doing this he showed the reader quite different images of the same character in different romances.

Klimovskaya Alisa(St Petersburg State University, Russia). Gender aspect of the issue of power in Barbara Pym`s “The Sweet Dove Died”

The report covers the author`s treatment of the issue of power, which is central to “The Sweet Dove Died”, from the point of view of gender. In the analysis comparative, intertextual methods as well as gender approach are applied. Pym`s love story with original gender conflict is related to Bronte`s “Jane Eyre” in the form of numerous allusions including images, plot, motives (in particular, that of imprisonment of the beloved), and problems tackled. In her mock paraphrase of relations between Rochester and Jane the author applies the technique of gender roles exchange. The image of Leonora, an uncharacteristic type of femaleness for Pym, undercuts traditional gender stereotypes in her inability to love, narcissism, appropriation of models of masculine behavior. The object of her chase, young James also differs from normative canon of masculinity. In the early 1970-s Pym addresses the topic of unconventional sexual orientation. In her version homosexual relationships are portrayed as unhappy, pervaded by the pursuit of power. The artistic peculiarity of Pym`s creation consists in the duality of its images and symbols, its association with both female and male essence.

Lipinskaia Anastasia. The evolution of the story of a dead bridegroom in British gothic tales

The story of a dead bridegroom, taken from folk ballads and known in literary versions by Bürger and Scott, was many times used by authors of ghost stories – from young W. Ainsworth (Spectre Bride) to late classics such as E. F. Benson’s The Face and E.Bowen’s The Demon Lover. Early examples show how the theme was understood in declining romantic tradition (coherency was almost inevitably lost while many tropes were still used almost automatically). In contrast, later ones show conscious playing on the story’s recognisability and gradual departure from a typical Victorian and Edwardian ghost story towards using its elements for the sake of creating the novella’s atmosphere and deeper analysis of the characters’ inner world (the protagonist’s meeting the ghost of her bridegroom killed at war in The Demon Lover can be understood as a metaphor of her solitude and emotional loss, social and psychological aspects noticeably prevail over the supernatural).
