Ex. 2. Think and say: «What do you know about the structure of company?»

Ex. 3. Read and translate the following text.

Text A. THE STRUCTURE OF A COMPANY

Organization structure in business is very important. People in a company, its employees hold different positions.

The relationship between those employees with different positions makes organization structure.

At present most firms are divided into their major parts:

- capital (shareholders);

- management;

- labour.

Let us take a typical company. There is a director who is a senior manager. He sets up the Board of Directors under the authority of the President. The Board decides what company policy and expenditure must be.

The chief executive officer (CEO) is the link between the Board and the senior management.

As for middle managers, they run departments of a firm. They account to the senior management for their area of the work done.

There is a difference between executive directors and non-executive ones. The directors who run their firm on day-to-day basis are called executive directors. Those who sit on the Board and do not run the firm directly are called non-executive directors. In modern American English they use also the term inside directors for executive and outside directors for non-executive ones.

Don't know where to start with your plan? What is a business plan?

Your business plan should be a living roadmap to success, not just a one-time document.

Business advisors, bankers, and investors generally agree that you should develop a business plan before you start a business. A plan can help you move forward, make decisions, and make your business successful. However, not all business plans are the same, not every business needs the same level of detail. You might develop a fairly simple plan first as you start a small business, and that might be enough for you. You can also start simple and then elaborate as you prepare to approach bankers or investors.

For a simple example, imagine a woman making jewelry at home and selling it at a local flea market on the weekend. A business plan could give her a chance to step back from the normal flow and look at ways to develop and improve the business. The planning process should help her understand her business. It should help her define what she wants from the business, understand what her customers want, and decide how to optimize her business on her own terms. She might benefit from developing a simple sales and expense forecast, maybe even a profit and loss, so she can plan how to use and develop her resources. She might not need to create detailed cash flow, balance sheet, and business ratios. A simple plan may be just what she needs to get going.

This first stage of a plan, that we call the Concept Kick-Start, focuses only on a few starter elements. The Mission Statement, Keys to Success, Market Analysis, and Break-Even Analysis give you a critical head start toward understanding your business.

ELECTRONIC INTELLIGENCE

On the one hand...,

       Science fiction films and books are full of robots that look, and even think, exactly like humans. Some people believe it will not be long before such machines become a reality. However, most advanced electronic machines still look like people. These machines cannot yet think in the same way as a person; some say theynever will. But they are able to make decisions and solve problems. An airliners automatic pilot, for example, can control the plane, even during take-off and landing.

       Computers issue detailed instructions in order to control the way robots act. The simplest robots just follow a set of instructions and repeat the same movements
again and again! Many factories rely on such robots to carry out the sort tasks
that a human worker would certainly find very boring and they can do many jobs
more rapidly and with great accuracy. Very advanced robots have sensors with which
they can collect information about their surroundings. These robots can move from
place to place, using very small television cameras to find the way. Many scientists
are convinced that robots will soon be intelligent enough to explore other planets
more effectively than humans.

Science fiction —научная фантастика; take off—взлет; landing—посадка; accuracy— точность; sensor— чувствительный элемент, датчик; humans — люди

 On the other hand...

Robots are already able to do all sorts of repetitive tasks currently performed by human beings. But the effective control remains with the human brain. No computer has yet been invented which can cope with the details of human language, And the idea of an artificial intelligence with a sense of humour and a conscience still seems a faraway dream. If, however, people believe in the faith of scientists working in the field of artificial intelligence, they will have to suspect that dreams just can become reality.

cope with— справиться; artificial intelligence — искусственный разум; conscience —совесть; sense of humour —чувство юмора

1. What is computer hacking?

2. Why do the hackers do what they do?

3. Are the companies taking the problem seriously?
