GVDA Medium and Long-Term Volunteer Projects 2018

Long Term Projects are specifically designed to give volunteers an opportunity to develop and promote their skills and services and in the process serving and promoting the development of the hosting community structures.

 

 

GVDA: MLTV01 – CARE GIVING ORPHANAGE VOLUNTEERING

Saomi Children center is a school for the less fortunate children in Masai land and its environs. It is a preschool and primary school with a population of 180 pupils’ boys and girls aged between 2 years and 16 years. The children come from poor background; they are orphaned or have suffered the wrath of Masai traditions of early marriage threats and circumcision attempts to young girls by the community.

Lolligorian is a shopping center 50km from Masai Mara game reserve. It is about 80km from the boarder of Tanzania and Kenya. The school is walking distance from Loligorian where there are good facilities like hotels, market, church shops. The market serves people from Kenya side and those from Tanzania side. The volunteers will also participate in our Saomi Centre school baking project which helps us to sell products to the school and community so as to raise funds to help maintain the children in school. Volunteers will bake and help in selling of products. At the school we also have a brick making project which is contributing towards school expansion programme. Volunteers will help in preparing the bricks up to the final stage when they are ready for use in building. The Saomi center school plants soya beans and keep chicken which we sell and maintain the children in the school.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The volunteers will work with the children, teaching English, Math, Social Science, singing, drawing and making crafts, helping them with their homework, and counseling.

The volunteers will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday are free. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended. Teaching English (1-2 hours a day) to children. Organizing games, drawing, singing, dancing, and other creative education and extracurricular activities. Taking kids on Playgrounds. Helping kids to do homework, monitor academic progress, and make sure kids complete their homework. Sanitation (helping kids in brushing teeth, shower, and personal hygiene).Child care services for orphans who cannot go to school. Help kids to dress up and reach school safely. Help with administration, running errands et,Helpinglikeactivities or programs designed for kids.Extra activities are baking and selling the product. Brick makingproject, environmental activities like tree planting and conservation.

Day 1: Arrival and pick upfrom the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, in Nairobi, Kenya and transfer to host family home or hostel.

Day 2: Morning registration and start of orientation. About 4 hours lecture at the home of your host. Topics covered during orientation lecture will include East African culture, history, customs, politics, geography, and necessary health precautions, and various other topics, such as the diversity of Kenyan life. Afternoon is free for exploring rural Kenyan life and getting to know your host family.

GVDAMLTV02: ENVIRONMENT AND CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERING

 

Kijabe EnvironmentalVolunteers (KENVO) is a community-Based organization engaged in developing sustainable nature conservation programs in Kikuyu Escarpment Forest’KENVO was formed in 1994 and officially registered in 1996.The major goal of KENVO is to promote conservation of the Kikuyu Escarpment ecosystems, while supporting community livelihoods.KENVO works in a number of key areas including capacity building, forestrestoration, youthempowerment, promotion ecotourism and research.KENVO has helped improve the livelihood of communities, reduce threats on biodiversity and develop youth leadership. It collaborates with key stakeholders such as government departments, research institutions, private sectors and other development agencies to inform, educate and build the capacity of communities to embrace appropriate conservation practices in sustainable way.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteers will raise community awareness on the value and importance of the local forests, biodiversity and other natural resources through environmental education and awareness campaigns. Promote both rural development and environmental-friendly income-generating activities that link community survival to environmental conservation.

The volunteers will also gather information through research on local natural resources and traditional knowledge and augments scientific work in biodiversity conservation

The volunteers will ensure local forests rich biological diversity is conserved with strong support and active participation from local communities
