The purpose of the lesson:

To acquaint students with the basic concepts in the field of illustrating a book both from the historical aspect and from the practical side.

Lesson Objectives:

• Educational - building knowledge of non-traditional techniques when working with watercolors, learning new English vocabulary;

• Developing - the formation of cognitive activity, the development of students' creative thinking, teamwork, the ability to analyze, generalize and apply the knowledge gained in practice;

• Educative- education of the aesthetic taste of students, respect for other people's work, love of the English language.

Forms of work:

Front-collective, group.

Lesson equipment:

- Watercolor paper;

- Brushes (squirrel);

- Watercolor (preferably "Nevskaya Palitra");

- Glass of water;

- Salt (coarse, fine-grained);

- Alcohol;

- Wax crayons/candles;

- White gouache;

- Bristle brush;

- Plastic bag;

- Paper napkin/ Paper crumpled into a ball.

DURING THE MASTER CLASS

Before we start our master class, we need to prepare the classroom: to build three big desks and seats around it. When pupils come into a class, we give them a little card with color (red, yellow, blue) and ask them to take a seat around their color desk:

Hello everyone! Today we would like to acquaint you with something interesting but at first we introduce ourselves. My name is Inna, my name is Alex, my name is Liza

Everybody knows about watercolors, but not everyone knows what magical properties they have when watercolors are interacting with other materials. Today we would like to show you magical effects.

Acquaintance with techniques (15 min.)

Inna: As you know, magic comes from the Space so we need to crate it firs of all. It’s really easy. We will need some watercolor paper, brushes, a rag to wipe them, a palette, a glass of water, watercolors, do not forget white paint and a bristle brush. Firstly, we use our soft brush and water and do like this. Then we need to work faster. I apply the main colors, the first layer of the background. It’s time for first trick: I take a napkin and crumple it, and then everything is easy and simple. Then we add a little bit of black on corners. We begin to spray white paint (creating a star pattern), it is very interesting to do, but do not overdo it. And that’s done! It’s pretty simple and it calls techniques of paper napkin and white gouache.

Liza: I'm going to show you the effect of "watercolor plus salt" and "watercolor plus plastic bag". Let's draw a winter landscape with a river. Draw water using blue shades. It is important to use a lot of paint. Then carefully apply the package to the layer of paint and leave to dry for a few minutes. The next step is to draw the sky. It is also necessary to use water and paint in sufficient quantities. You can use blue and pink colors, for example. You need to wait about 30 seconds and then you can start creating a magic snow. We're just sprinkling salt on our beautiful skies. Look how beautiful it is! After a while we will see the effect on the sky. Now look what Alexandra has prepared for you.

Alex: To begin with, I would like to show you the effect with wax crayons. Instead of crayons, we can use candles. I want to draw dandelions with you. First of all, we take a wax crayon and draw the stems of a plant, for example a dandelion. Next, we paint on top with thick watercolor strokes. We try to use more water. At the same time, we see that the watercolor does not paint over the crayons. This is a beautiful effect. Then we do not let the watercolors dry and drip a drop of alcohol in a place of our future flowers. Look how beautiful it is! Alcohol takes away pigment and we get beautiful smudges. Then we dry the work. Thus, we got wonderful flowers. Now you know how unusual it is to draw flowers in watercolor. Thank you for attention!

After presentation of some techniques each of us takes a prepared inventory and we begin to explain the practical task:

And it’s time for practice. We believe that you listened well to us. So, you need to show your magical talent and successfully complete our task. You can use everything that you see on the desk but of course you should use new techniques.

Alex: And now I want you to paint my portrait using the effects that I have showed you. It can be something like a caricature, you can do some expressions of my face. I offer you some tips: you can make the face contour with wax crayons, and put watercolor on top of your picture. The effect with alcohol can be used as a background. I will sit next to you here. So, let's get started. I hope you'll enjoy it. Good luck!

Liza: It is a magical still life, consisting of a variety of sweets. Your task is to draw it working as a team. You have to use the effects I showed you. Who can remind me the names of these effects? ("watercolor plus salt", "watercolor plus plastic bag"). To begin with, we outline our still life with pencil, then you can paint it using watercolors. Don't forget to use effects. I wish you success in your work!

Inna: And I suggest you to create an illustration! So, you need to create a character with effects which I presented to you. Who can say names of these techniques?  Let’s remember King Arthur and try to draw his! Of course, you need to create a well-designed character with any emotion and with a sword in hand. Practice with materials (20 min.)

During the doing tasks we can take some tips. Some phrases for teacher:

˗ You should begin with a pencil. It will be easy to create some picture and color it.

˗ If you made a useless spot you can imagine some interesting details with it.

˗ If you’ve already done this task you can joying to another group.

˗ You should use only two techniques, do not forget it.

˗ You can be more creativity and draw interior items.
