Does scientific progress bring advantages or disadvantages to our life?

We live in the age of progress and technology which is both friend and enemy. Technology can be seen as a friend to humanity that makes life easier, cleaner and longer. It does humanity good. It’s almost a positive claim based on medical advancements such as x-ray devices and medical drugs that help to lengthen life and help humanity. But medical companies make millions out of these medical advancements. Many technological advances lead to environmental problems. We can also say that technology creates a culture without moral foundation. Take for example the Internet. It was created for people to communicate, yet some people use it as their only form of communication with other people. This doesn’t necessarily help their social skills in the real and outside world away from the Internet. People can become addicted and dependent on this technology. To sum up, scientific progress has both pros and cons.

What questions would you ask an outstanding scientist?

What sphere of science are you interested in?

Where did you get your education?

Have you got a master’s or a Ph.D. degree?

Do prefer working alone or in a team?

I wonder what a typical day of a scientist is like?

Give me a piece of advice on how to become a scientist.

First of all think it over again whether you really want to go into science and become a scientist. There is nothing wrong about being a scientist. You may really like it. Just make sure that your temperament and personality fit this type of job. The next step is to choose a field you like. Chemistry, physics and mathematics are the largest areas of study for scientists, but it’s also possible to specialize in astronomy or biology, depending on what you want to do later. Get a bachelor’s degree in your chosen field, although most research jobs require a master’s degree or a Ph. D. Try to get some job experience or do some job shadowing with scientists. You will gain practical experience and contacts that may help you in your future job. It’s very important to keep up with the latest developments in your field. You should attend conferences, participate in workshops and read lots of magazines and books in your chosen area.

Some people support cloning, others are against it. What do you think about cloning?

Of course like any other invention cloning has its advantages and disadvantages. Scientists clone cows and pigs to produce better milk and meat. Some laboratories have been experimenting on modifying pigs so that they can grow cells and organs that humans can use. Scientists clone cat as cats have an animal AIDS that is a good model for studying human AIDS. Some companies hope to make money by cloning people’s favourite dead or sick pets. These experiments can be thought as beneficial for people. I think scientists should continue such kind of cloning research.

But people are getting really interested in cloning a special mammal –humans. It’s not a god idea. Human cloning projects are criminally irresponsible. Part of the reason this is the low success rate in cloning. Many governments have introduced ban on human cloning research.

Our country is world-famous thanks to its artists, composers, etc. Tell me about some of them.

Our country is world famous thanks to its artists, composers, writers. The art of the Belorussian society consists of many aspects. Talented personalities made great contribution to the development of Belorussian art. Belorussian art has deep roots in the past. It goes back to the 11th century. At that time the first actors appeared on the territory of Belarus. This art was based on folklore, folk poetry. Later serf theatres appeared in Mogilev, Grodno, Vitebsk. In 1840 Dounin Martsinkevich organized a theatre “The First Belorussian Company”. Now we’ve got different theatres in all big cities and even towns in Belarus. There are plenty of artists who portrayed the natural beauty of nature, depicted great events of the country, its heroic past and present. Khrutskiy, Zaitsev, Volkov, Savitskiy and others. Not less significant are the achievements in sculpture. Among well-known sculptors are: Bembel (one of the creators of Brest memorial), Asgur (the monument to YakubKolos), Vakar (the expressive monument to M. Bogdanovich) and others. There are a lot of talented musicians. A great number of operas, symphonies have been created by Tikotskiy, AnotoliyBogatyriyov: ”Pushas”, “In the Polesye”. There are ensembles in Belarus which perform Belorussian songs: the state folk Choir, Pesnyary, Byaseda and others. They combine folk song heritage with contemporary music. AnatoliyYarmolenka and his group “Syabry”, Vladimir Mulyavin with his group “Pesnyary” revived the Belorussian folk songs and gave them the new sound. We are proud of our representatives of art.

The world-famous artist Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk. In 1917 he was appointed director of the Free Academy of Art in Vitebsk and became a founder, a director and the most popular teacher of the Academy. He created in avant-garde, cubism style, illustrated the Bible. By 1930 his name was known worldwide. Chagall was also one of very few artists to exhibit work at the Louvre in the lifetime such as “I and the village”, “The three candles”, “View of Paris” and others.
